THE PROBLEM.

THE TOTAL INSTITUTION Daily life in a total institution is tightly scheduled and is organized around batch processing of inmates or residents. Managing the daily lives of a large number of persons in a relatively small space with limited resources leads, almost inescapably, to surveillance and control of behaviour, hierarchical staff-inmate interaction, and the dominance of routines that serve the institution s efficiency. In its closeting and control of the individual, the total institution acts, finally, as a barrier to the outside world and the previous identities and life activities of its inhabitants (Colopy, Boyle, & Jennings, 1991, p.8).

BUREAUCRACY - HOW DOES IT WORK? The Herd.that is, us (Milgram, Kohlberg, Kiekekaard, Nietzsche, Sartre ) organizational imperative is the directive in a group of people, all working to accomplish a singular task, or tasks that share the same goals and different parts of the same base requirements, forming a structured, symbiotic organization intended to achieve more effectively and reliably, said goal. (Smith 2015) The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. (Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged, 1957) The majority of people don't want to plan. They want to be free of the responsibility of planning. What they ask for is merely some assurance that they will be decently provided for. The rest is a day-to-day enjoyment of life.. (BF Skinner, Walden II, 1948)

BUREAUCRACY: VALUES Efficiency Effectiveness Productivity Value Neutrality

WHAT CAN BE DONE? WHAT IS MISSING? The role of philosophy in in meaningful work

MEANING: A CLASSICAL VIEW The unexamined life is not worth living (Socrates); The unexamined organisation is not worth sustaining.

PHILOSOPHY OF MEANING: Existentialism

EXISTENTIALISM Fundamental Premise Existence precedes essence This implies: Free will & Responsibility

Sartre, Nietzsche, Camus Frankl All agreed that the individual is what he or she makes of him or herself - the sum of all decisions and reactions to circumstance. Suggested that meaning in life can be found as a function of our own choices.

PHILOSOPHY TO PSYCHOLOGY Existentialism Hardiness

HUMAN DRIVES Freud Pleasure Adler Power Frankl Meaning

HUMANITY S SEARCH FOR MEANING Frankl suggested that we find meaning in: What we do or create (e.g., work); Our relationships; and How we face suffering.

LOGOTHERAPY & MIDWIFERY Socrates & Frankl

SOCRATIC MIDWIFE: TRUE LEADERSHIP? Heaven constrains me to serve as a midwife, but has debarred me from giving birth. So of myself I have no sort of wisdom, nor has any discovery ever been born to me as the child unintelligent all who are favoured by heaven make progress at a rate that seems surprising to others as well as to themselves, although it is clear that they have never learned anything from me. The many admirable truths they bring to birth have been discovered by themselves from within. But the delivery is heaven's work and mine. From Plato's Theaetetus (148e-151d, translated by F. N. Cornford).

HOW TO BE AN ORGANISATIONAL MIDWIFE?

HARDINESS Salvatore Maddi Developed a theory and measurement tool to assess an individual s level of hardiness Based upon a longitudinal study of employees you faced layoffs in a large US company. Tracked their coping or lack of coping strategies over 12 years 1/3 viewed the employment dilemma as an opportunity These individuals possessed control, commitment, and challenge attitudes and flourished as a function of the dilemma they were given.

WHAT IS HARDINESS? Commitment Control Challenge

CONTROL When I make plans, I m certain I can make them work Versus Most of what happens in life is just meant to be

CHALLENGE Changes in routine provoke me to learn Versus I am not equipped to handle the unexpected problems of life

COMMITMENT I often wake up eager to take up life wherever it left off Versus It s hard to imagine anyone getting excited about working

EXISTENTIALISM IN PRACTICE Existentialism Hardiness Research

THE RESEARCH Over 1000 articles exploring hardiness in a variety of contexts: Military (PTS) Teachers Athletes Nurses Patients Students

CONCLUSIONS OF HARDINESS RESEARCH IN WORK SETTINGS High Hardy are able to withstand the stresses of life better than low hardiness individuals; High Hardy have lower turnover, burn-out & absenteeism, less physical/stress related illness, and are more productive; High Hardy see opportunity in negative situations.

HARDINESS ANTIDOTE OR INOCULATION?

MEANINGFUL WORK Meaningful work is a function of work-related activity (means and ends) that consistently leads to the individual flourishing: Am I a better person (in the end) as a result of working here?

MEANINGFUL WORK? Meaningful work may be a function of the leaders (formal and informal) ability to pull meaning from the individual : What do you value and why do you value it?

HOW? Leadership s awareness of meaning and midwifery The organisational imperative is not THE imperative! What is the target? Aristotle to Flourish (eudaimonia) What is the structure that could accommodate this? Can meaning be found in a bureaucracy? Altruistic hedonism. Authentic compliance?

CONSIDER: Organisational real vs. apparent values & meaning Who you hire? What do they value? See as meaningful? What orientation & education of valuesand meaning takes place?

FINAL NOTE Albert Camus and other existential philosophers believed that life is absurd, undetermined, and meaningless (as must work be).

If they are correct then we have three options open to us: 1. Exit work life; 2. Suffer the absurdity ( depressed, unhappy, & dissatisfied ); 3. Create our own meaning because otherwise there is none.
