5 A. Fanniff 5 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Psychosocial Development and Decisional Competence 9/10 present Department of Mental Health Law and Policy, University of South Florida The goal of this study is to examine whether psychosocial skills (e.g., future orientation, risk appraisal, temperance, responsibility, and resistance to peer influence) mediate the relationship between age and disadvantageous patterns of legal decision making (e.g., younger children s decisions to plead guilty are not influenced by the strength of evidence against them). Collaborator: Randy Otto. Functional Deficits in Juvenile Defendants found Incompetent to Proceed 9/10 present due to Immaturity Department of Mental Health Law and Policy, University of South Florida This exploratory study will provide information on the functional deficits in trial-related abilities presented by juveniles adjudicated incompetent due to immaturity through a review of juvenile competence evaluations. Collaborators: Randy Otto and Annette Christy. Understanding Risk Factors in Juveniles Adjudicated for Sexual Offenses 9/10 present Department of Mental Health Law and Policy, University of South Florida This study will utilize the Pathways to Desistance dataset to determine whether juveniles adjudicated for sexual offenses differ from general delinquents on background characteristics and whether empirically supported risk and need factors operate differently in these two groups. Collaborators: Ed Mulvey, Carol Schubert, Anne-Marie Iselin, Alex Piquero. Juvenile Sex Offender Subtypes Study 10/08 9/10 Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh PA The goal of this study was to determine whether juveniles adjudicated for sexual offenses against children differ from those who committed sexual offenses against peers/adults or both categories of victims on a variety of relevant clinical variables. Collaborator: David Kolko. Juvenile Sexual Offender Assessment Protocol-II study 4/08 6/10 Department of Psychology, This study used data from an effectiveness study of MST with juveniles adjudicated for sexual offenses to examine the inter-rater reliability, internal consistency, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and predictive validity of the Juvenile Sex Offender Assessment Protocol-II (J-SOAP-II). Collaborator: Elizabeth Letourneau. Dissertation Research 10/06 4/09 Department of Psychology, This project had two major goals. The first goal was to investigate the utility of the Competency Assessment for Standing Trial for Defendants with Mental Retardation (CAST-MR) in assessing juvenile defendants. Psychometric properties and relevant correlates were examined. The second goal was to investigate the relationship between judgment and juveniles decisions regarding their own cases (e.g., to confess, to plead guilty). Committee members: Judith V. Becker, Ph.D. (Chair), Bruce D. Sales, Ph.D., Connie J.A. Beck, Ph.D., Richard R. Bootzin, Ph.D.

6 A. Fanniff 6 Master s Project 3/03 12/04 Department of Psychology, This archival file review project examined sexual risk using data regarding all juveniles referred to a juvenile court for a sexual offense over a 5 year period ( ).
