What an exciting and inspiring time; the feel-good factor that embraced the nation was a welcome change from the doom and gloom of recent times. Let s hope the upbeat mood continues as we move into the new season. I, for one am really looking forward to the autumn. One of the highlights for me is the APHP annual conference on 27th & 28th October in London. There s a really good mix of speakers this year including Kim Manning from the States who will be sharing her expertise on identifying and working with Eating Disorders, Seth-Deborah Roth on Medical Hypnosis, Bill Bliss on Four Different Traumas, Four Different Therapies and of course Terence Watts presenting his innovative new Recursive Therapy. It s certain to be a great weekend. There are some great CPD events coming up both at Central England College and at my centre in SW London. There are some returning presenters, back by popular demand and some new faces too. We d like to keep you up to date on all that s happening and what better way to do that than by Twitter. To tempt you to follow us on we will be offering a free CPD place every month to a new or existing follower until March So, keep up to date with all the news and views and share your own. We look forward to seeing you soon. Best Wishes, Autumn Edition

quick sell. If you are caring and find good leads for other members they will reciprocate with hypnotherapy clients for you. Hypnotherapy before breakfast by Aston Colley 6.30am. A group of business professionals get together with one aim, to give each other referrals. Once a week over breakfast, the accountant, lawyer, printer, florist, gym owner, etc, give each other work. Their philosophy is Givers Gain. If you help me I will help you. There are a number of networking organizations. I am referring to BNI (Business Networking International) which has a lot of chapters in many towns and generally meet for breakfast at 6.30am and finish by 8.30am. A breakfast worth getting up for. All this ties in very well with my passion for Yoga. The Hindu fakirs have been getting up well before breakfast to practice hypnotherapy since 2000 BC. I can thank business networking for not only helping me build up and sell my previous business but introducing me to my new profession of hypnotherapy. Having reached the age of fifty, I had become tired of the corporate world and wanted a new challenge. I knew having been a Samaritan Volunteer for 5 years that offering people support could be demanding but ultimately very rewarding, but volunteering did not pay the bills. A networking friend suggested I consider hypnotherapy, a profession that genuinely helps people, provides an income and needs some business skills. Having taken his advice I recently completed the Clinical Hypnotherapy Course at Central England College. Networking has helped me get off the ground. As part of my marketing strategy I set aside time each week to attend a breakfast meeting. The agenda gives each member time to promote and educate fellow members about their business. It s a good opportunity for me to explain what hypnosis is, not the Hollywood version. I also make requests for introductions to certain clients, for example, smokers, people with weight issues etc. Of course I constantly mention my trading name and strap line Unwind hypnotherapy to calm the mind Verbal testimonials given at the meetings are also very powerful. Last week one of clients talked about quitting smoking after a session with me. That was great because I had four referrals as a result of his testimonial. The philosophy Givers Gain reminds me of Stephen Covey s habit No 5, Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Attending networking meetings is about building long term relationships, not getting the Neurological Disorders by Dr Nick Wright Neurological disorders are diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system. In other words, the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, peripheral nerves, nerve roots, autonomic nervous system, neuromuscular junction, and muscles. Together they control all the workings of the body. When something goes wrong with a part of your nervous system, you can have trouble moving, speaking, swallowing, breathing or learning. You can also have problems with your memory, senses or mood. These disorders include Epilepsy, Alzheimer disease and other dementias, cerebrovascular diseases including stroke, migraine and other headache disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Dystonia, Bell s Palsy, Essential Tremor, neuro infections, brain tumours, traumatic disorders of the nervous system such as brain trauma, and neurological disorders as a result of malnutrition. There are over 600 known neurological disorders and conditions that affect the human nervous system and for many of them treatment options are extremely limited. In addition to the physical and mental toll these conditions take on patients, their families and carers, they also have an enormous economic impact, resulting in millions of pounds annually in lost productivity.

The Mind-Body Connection, once a very controversial concept, is now widely accepted, as is the fact that the mind and the body should be treated as the whole. Mind-body medicine focuses on treatments that may promote health and wellbeing. As Hypnotherapists we are well placed and have a unique opportunity to offer help in a number of these conditions. Not only in helping with the stress, lack of confidence and self-esteem that results, both in the patient and also their immediate family, but also in helping the patient to regain some control over the condition itself. Disorders such as Parkinson s disease, Dystonia, Bell s Palsy, Essential Tremor, to name but a few, are well within our reach. Dystonia for instance, is a neurological condition whose main symptoms are involuntary prolonged muscle spasms experienced as painful, repetitive movements and postures which can also be painful, but does not lead to problems with other functions of the brain such as intellect, vision and hearing, sensation and sexual function. The movements are caused by abnormal function of the motor pathways in the central nervous system. Abnormal muscle movements are the main symptom and the cause of disability in the condition. The abnormal movements are not under conscious control and usually persist for life. Dystonias are rare; abnormal movements are very visible, the fact that movements are uncontrollable can be difficult for unaffected people to understand, the condition may often be perceived as psychological. Dystonia affects men and women of all ages. If it develops in childhood, it tends to become generalised and can be particularly disabling. Dystonia which has its onset in adult life usually remains focal and is more common in those over 40 years of age. Dystonia can be difficult to diagnose and many patients remain untreated because their symptoms are unrecognised. It is thought that there are more than 70,000 people with Dystonia in the UK. Therapists who have an understanding of both this condition and the Mind-Body Connection, can learn how to push the boundaries and cross over into the world of Medical Hypnosis, which is an underutilised therapeutic modality, and by doing so can expand their practice into this extremely interesting and satisfying field. Dr Nick Wright is running a CPD event One Mind, One Body an integrated approach to neurological disorders at Central England College on Sunday 9th December See the CPD listing below for details. NLP Well formed outcomes for Success by Robert Perkins Like many of you, I have been thinking about business success lately and of course, how you see success may very well be different to me. You may be imagining a full client book, a lovely shiny office with a bright and airy reception room with clients waiting to be seen, or you may be hearing the telephone ringing and you or your receptionist booking more appointments. You may be getting a warm glow inside in the knowledge that you are really helping your clients to achieve their own goals and aspirations. Or it may be very different - you may be sitting there with a head full of dreams and aspirations but unsure how to start your journey towards success. Take a moment to think about where you are right now in your career. Is it where you want to be? Do you know what you want to achieve? Are you as successful as you had hoped? Consider the following scenario. Sue is a Hypnotherapist and is really keen to expand her client base and income. To this end she sits and continually ponders How can I get this? Thoughts and ideas are explored but dashed by her inner critic and so she goes round in circles, searching for a way forward but achieving only frustration and anxiety. The Well Formed Outcomes model is a great way to shift your thinking from being an ordinary person to a successful person. Successful people consider goals and outcomes before they begin, while ordinary people just begin. Sounds easy enough but in my experience most people tell you what they don t want. It is vital that this initial statement is positive. Whatever your goal is and in this instance we will assume its success, make sure you now fully explore in your inner mind s eye how success will look, sound and feel.

Consider, if your success depends upon others and if so who? Or does it depend on you? Have you stated something which you can start and maintain and what specific actions can you take today? Bob is also facilitating a practical CPD training on the topic of Mastery of Communication and Developing Deep Rapport at CEC on Sunday 7th April See details in the CPD listing below Define in your mind the specific environment and context of your success. It will affect family and friends, so bring them into your vision and see, feel and hear how they also enjoy success. Eliminate anything superfluous and see, feel and hear the specific behaviours needed to make it so. Do you need more confidence or courage and what resources are missing that might prevent you from taking the next step? Identify and acquire them. Do you have resources in another part of your life which you could draw upon in this part? For example, are you tenacious in getting to the root cause of your clients issues? What is the specific evidence of this? What are the sensory based specific clues that you have achieved your desired outcome? What will let you know that you have achieved your goal? Now review your goal in a compelling way. Does it motivate you so that you have to have it? If not, go back and find what is missing (usually the initial statement has not been positive enough) then ramp up the experience. Brighten the colours, turn up the volume and make it fast and exciting. Is it better for you to see yourself as though on a movie (Dissociated) or through your own eyes (Associated)? Finally, does this fit with your other goals, beliefs and values? Does any part of you object to your success? If you could have it now, would you? So, there you have it. When you have gone through this exercise, notice the differences in your vision and motivation to succeed and be successful. I believe this model is empowering and motivating. It builds outcome thinking and focus, encourages the consideration of all angles and helps build a road map towards success. Robert (Bob) is an accredited NLP trainer with the business name and website lifeparadigm. He facilitates an NLP practice group for hypnotherapists as well as NLP practitioners on the last Wednesday evening of each month at CEC. For further information contact Bob directly on CBT Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Diploma training with David Kato CBT is the therapy of choice for patients consulting with both medical and psychiatric physicians, and more noticeably GP's. Physicians will encourage their patients to seek help from a cognitive behavioural therapist, largely because CBT is a brief therapy, is evidence based and has proved to gain superior results over longer term counselling and psychotherapy. David Kato, a clinical hypnotherapist / psycho-analyst / behavioural therapist, has utilised CBT in his depression clinic since 1994 with good outcomes and has produced a comprehensive two day cognitive behaviour therapy diploma course for qualified hypnotherapists and mental health professionals. This is an intensive course designed for therapists with an understanding of conditions such as anxiety, OCD, panic disorders and depression through their previous training. Both mornings will be applied to gaining theoretical knowledge, including assessment, planning action, intervention and evaluation skills and the afternoons will be workshop style, so you can harness what you learn. This will involve minor to major mental health problem scenarios including, anxiety states, panic disorder, OCD, depression, insomnia, eating disorders, IBS, stress, reducing weight, to name a few. A plan of action is required for an individual patient / client, therefore writing scripts for the hypnotherapy sessions, and providing self-help assignments is an important aspect. Scenarios will also help you to obtain an understanding of how CBT can be applied efficiently and effectively, so you can create good patient outcomes. Although this course applies to hypnotherapists, psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists and counsellors who have also attended, find it of great value. These CBT techniques can only enhance your on-going therapeutic skills, ultimately increasing your client capacity. By attending this focused, fast-track course, you will obtain 20 CEU's and receive an attendance certificate. For those

therapists who wish to obtain the diploma, you will be required to pass the CBT exam. This CBT diploma course is accredited by with the Academy For Continued Hypnosis Education, National Register of Advanced Hypnotherapists (NRAH) & Hypnotherapy Control Board Ltd (HCB), also an Open College Network (SWR) course, Level 3 (6 credits). David is a very generous and popular tutor and attendees will receive a comprehensive resource pack with all course notes included, self-help assignments for your patients / clients, six session example scripts and duplicate course material, plus a CD with your exam. David is presenting this course at The Hypnotherapy & Natural Health Centre in London, SW19 on Saturday & Sunday 17th & 18th November Places on this course will be strictly limited to allow for plenty of tutor / learner interaction. The attendance fee is 395. From the desk of the Principal All it takes is a Miracle! One lesson that therapists may find it useful to take on board is that we can t always be successful in helping our clients. Indeed it would be pretty miraculous if we did. Of course, we want to be 100% successful with every client and we want to offer them the most effective approaches with their particular issues. There s a slight problem however every client is a unique human being and approaches which we have used successfully with some clients may be completely unsuccessful with others, even though they have a similar problem. The word similar in similar problem is also a clue! It is very rare for symptoms to be identical. For a newly qualified therapist it can be very disconcerting to feel that we have failed, but we really do need to learn that we are still ok as a therapist even if we don t always achieve success. Newly qualified therapists who achieve a good level of success early on in their career are fortunate in having a solid confidence base upon which to build future successes. A great way of providing effective help to our clients is to adopt a brief solutions focus. We may focus endlessly on finding a cause in the belief that unless we find this we cannot possibly effect a solution. The basis of the original form of psychotherapy, Freudian Analysis, taught that clients should lie on a couch and freely associate memories, often from young childhood years. Traumatic events from this time are repressed and subsequently recovered from the unconscious during therapy. This may result in a release from emotional and psychosomatic illnesses. There is a serious problem unfortunately. This being the length of time this form of therapy takes often several years. Success rates, especially considering the length of treatment, are rather low. However, at the time before the birth of behavioural therapies, this was all there was. Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy (SFH) has at its roots in Solutions Focussed Brief Therapy (SFBT) which was originated by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, family trauma therapists and researchers in the USA in the 1970s. The concept is startlingly simple - focus on the possible solutions to a problem / symptom and we are much more likely to achieve success than if we focus on the problem itself. Using SFH we are likely to ask such questions as, What do you like doing?, What are you good at doing?, What is going on when you don t experience the symptoms? and What can you do that may help? Therapy is therefore likely to take on a very positive style which can be highly motivational for the client. At times psychodynamic practitioners (including Freudian Analysts) will level the criticism that solutions focus work is far too brief, just scratches at the surface and may lead to subsequent relapse due to symptom substitution. In truth, all forms of therapy have their place and the great thing about SFH is its brief, positive, motivational focus and the way it engages the client in the process. SFH practitioners are taught to employ a solutions focussed counselling approach during the assessment phase and later in re-evaluation as therapy progresses. Often, during these phases clients may lack belief in their ability to change and will say that they cannot see themselves changing. In the miracle question clients are asked to imagine that while they are sleeping that night a miracle happens and in that miracle their issues are completely solved. They are informed that because they were sleeping they did not know that a miracle had happened and they are asked to imagine what the first thing is they are seeing, hearing and feeling that lets them know that this miracle has happened. What will they notice later that day, when they are at work, next week etc? It s a very powerful, imaginative process and fully congruent with a solutions focus to therapy. Clients often report that this can be a key point in successful therapy for

them and it can, of course be repeated during the course of treatment. Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy including the Miracle Question is taught regularly at Central England College in a fully certificated 5 day training course. Dr David Kato & Frankie Eating Disorders and OCD An unhealthy relationship with food is a term that covers many problem eating patterns from those who overdo the biscuits they have with their afternoon tea, to those who spend huge amounts of cash on certain foods which they will binge in secret then vomit back up minutes later or others who will starve themselves to the point of hospitalisation or even death. Therapists of all disciplines will see clients whose eating habits are affecting the physical or emotional wellbeing of their clients, but brief therapies such as hypnotherapy can be appealing to individuals who want fast results or may not want to admit to their GP that they have a problem with eating, self image or esteem. Specialist help within the NHS is variable from region to region and sufferers may be offered as few as six CBT sessions. Anorexia and Bulimia are the most well-known of eating disorders, but there are many variations including bingeing without purging, bingeing and excessive exercising and EDNOS ( Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified ). Unfaltering adherence to a healthy diet (sometimes known as Orthorexia) can have serious consequences too, resulting in serious weight loss due to an absence, or very low levels of fats and other nutrients. These are a complex range of behaviours though, and a thorough understanding of the symptoms, causes and practises of clients with different eating disorders is essential. Clients may not display all the defining symptoms of a particular eating disorder or match precisely the pattern in personality and/or history that might accompany a specific eating pattern, but there are often similar situational traits that manifest in problem eating and the need to exercise control over body shape and size. Understanding the underlying issues is essential to successful treatment. Sadly, eating disorders are extremely common and for those who choose to specialise in this area, there is no shortage of work. LM Dr David Kato, one of the most eminent trainers in the UK is returning to Central England College to deliver an Eating Disorders and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) diploma course in the New Year. This is an intensive two-day course and includes an extremely impressive resource pack including numerous scripts, forms and interventions. Therapists who successfully complete a multiple choice question paper within 30 days of attending the course will receive their Anorexia, Bulimia, Eating Disorders & OCD Diploma. David is presenting this specialist course at Central England College on Wednesday 23rd & Thursday 24th of January The cost of attendance is 220. Last time this course was held at Central England it was a sell-out, so book early to avoid disappointment. Book review There are countless books on the market dealing with business development, marketing and sales and if you have been working on developing your practice, you may have purchased one or two. As the theme of this issue of Hypnoversity is Boosting your Business, I selected to read Get Clients Now by C.J.Hayden and Twelve months to your ideal private practice a workbook by Lynn Grodzki. The former is described as a 28 day marketing plan and is aimed at professionals, consultants and coaches, whilst the Grodzki book is aimed specifically at therapists. What struck me when I started to read the Hayden book was the apparent assumption that readers will be motivated and ready and simply need a plan and structure in order to take action; self-sabotage is touched on only briefly and the solution suggested is regular affirmations. By contrast the first four chapters of the Grodzki book are on preparation; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, progressing to marketing only in month six. Both books include tasks to be completed over the designated period a month or a year, but to compare the two publications is a bit like comparing apples and pears. Get clients now is described as a program, divided into three sections: The Setup, The System and The Strategies which includes action plans and worksheets, whilst the Grodzki workbook comprises of exercises throughout. This may deter those who don t want to invest substantial time working through their thoughts and feelings before planning congruent business strategies, but for those who have a holistic approach rather than a hard-headed business one this may be the preferred publication. Both encourage focus and commitment and I believe they could each be very useful to therapists wanting to build their practices. LM

Transactional Analysis by Ann Finnemore Transactional Analysis (TA) is a model which can be used to help understand personality, relationships and communication. Although widely known at a pop psychology level, the model has also gained acceptance as a professional approach in a range of fields including psychotherapy, education and corporate management. The reason for this is that, underneath the seemingly simplistic top level concepts, there is a depth to the TA model and a complexity between its various concepts that enables it to fit to the real world of personality and personal interactions. Many people know the two most well-known parts of the TA model: Ego states and how they interact during transactions and the I m ok you re ok TA catchphrase. Indeed, they have been used in therapy and other settings for many years. However, there is so much more to TA which can be of use, particularly to therapists and their clients. TA contains concepts which explain why people repeatedly fall into the same patterns of behaviour and have the same types of relationship problems again and again, and concepts which can help understand the roots of limiting beliefs and emotional problems. Importantly, these concepts can be used within hypnotherapy to enable the client to change and break free of the patterns and beliefs that hold them back. Ann Finnemore, clinical hypnotherapist and life coach has designed a workshop which provides a broad overview of the main concepts of TA and the ways in which they can be used within therapy sessions. The concepts covered will include: Ego States, Strokes, Racket Feelings, Games, the Drama Triangle, Injunctions and Drivers and the Life Script. The aim of the workshop is to provide hypnotherapists with enough knowledge of TA to be able to put into practice some of the applications covered and also to whet the appetite of attendees to find out more about this fascinating and highly useful model of personality. Ann is co-owner of Getting You There Body and Mind Therapies based in South West Leicestershire. She studied Transactional Analysis for a year at the Berne Institute under Ian Stewart and Adrienne Lee, two of the leading lights in TA. Ann does much of her work with people suffering from anxiety and reactive depression and is a registered therapist with Anxiety UK. She uses TA frequently within her therapy work, both directly and within hypnosis and finds that clients understand it and respond well to it. Ann is presenting her TA workshop at Central England College on Sunday 24th February See CPD list later in this journal. Problem Gambling Intrigued by the environment of the casinos, after attending an event in Las Vegas, Hilary Norris-Evans began to research the behaviour of casino gamers and gamblers in general. Whilst a night out at the Hilary Norris-Evans casino isn t necessarily a regular pursuit of Joe Public, visiting a betting shop is an everyday occurrence for many. Any old perceptions of betting shops as mysterious or illicit have now disappeared as government de-regulation has led to these establishments becoming more visible on the high street. Advertising of all types of gaming opportunities is now allowed and online casino brands have taken full advantage of this change in the law. Unlike casinos and race courses which whilst attracting huge numbers, may remain a fantasy world for many, amusement centres and betting shops are very accessible and real. As with alcohol, gambling in its various forms is now viewed as socially acceptable. Betting on sports events is very popular and internet gambling makes participation extremely easy as well as secret. Using credit cards rather than cash to fund this can not only make it easy to spend beyond what can be afforded, but can also feel to the gamer as if real money isn t involved at all. The same applies to casino chips. Fixed odds slot machines found in a variety of establishments can entice youngsters into gambling, as do scratch cards which are highly addictive and readily available from corner shops and supermarkets. For problem gamblers as with alcoholics and drug addicts, their habit often becomes more important than family or friends. As with these groups, most gambling addicts have an underlying issue but rather than taking a substance into their body, they experience a natural rush. If these adrenalin junkies are to permanently quit their habit, the hole left by the loss of risk and excitement, must be filled in some other way. Agitation and difficulty in relaxing is often a characteristic trait of problem gamblers and hypnotherapy can be an important part of an effective strategy for change. There is no doubt that gambling is an addiction and is likely to become a very much bigger social problem as gambling in all its forms becomes more and more mainstream. Having thoroughly researched the industry and the problems and patterns of gambling addicts (which differ significantly from other addictions) Hilary has developed a training course for hypnotherapists who want to work in this rewarding area. LM Hilary Norris-Evans is running a one day CPD event in SW London on Sunday 17th February See the CPD list later in this journal.
