Framework for Psychology in Sport Jason Yuill Proctor Performance Psychologist - Lead for Rowing HPSNZ
Who we share the performance and well being space with HR Consultants Life Coaches Executive Coaches Mentors Managers Mental Skills Trainers Coaches Coach Consultants Counsellors Bishops Counsellors Athlete Life Advisors
Definitions Coaching Psychology Process for enhancing well-being and performance in personal life and work domains underpinned by models of coaching grounded in established adult and child learning or psychological theories and approaches. International Society for Coaching Psychology Sport Psychology Proficiency that uses psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes, developmental and social aspects of sports participation, and systemic issues associated with sports settings and organizations. American Psychological Association
NZ Rowing 120 athletes from u19, u21, u23, Elites age range Coach led programme with HPD two elite head coaches a selector 7 Elite Coaches + the 2 head coaches An HPAD managing the age group programmes with 5 u23 coaches 4 u21 coaches 4 Junior coaches Wider Support team includes: Physiologist, Strength and Conditioner, Nutritionist, Athlete Life counsellor, Physiotherapist, GP, Massage Therapist, Team Manager, 3 Psychologists supporting NZ Rowing Elite Programme on 1.2FTE 3 Distinctly different Psychology Training programs also from different countries Clinical Psychologist (NZ) Counseling Psychologist (Australia) Sport/Coaching Psychologist (UK)
Key theoretical underpinnings often set us apart from non psych consultants Neuropsychology models of resilience and emotions LeDoux, Rossouw In Sport to much Applied Resilience in sport Fletcher, mental toughness - Gould, Jones & Hardy Psychological Safety - Kahn, Rossouw emphasis Theories of Emotion from Lazarus; Jones, Hardy on & Woodman theory risk Self Determination Theory, Deci & Ryan Skill Development Theories - Ackerman; Fits & Posner; Anderson making us unrelatable, Working memory and attentional resource - Baddely; Kreitz; Kane, Bleckley, Conway, & Engle Self Efficacy, Bandura Therapeutic unapproachable Relationship, Rogers; Hovarth & Luborsky & Social connectedness - Lieberman Cognitive theories on focus/attention - Treisman; Tenenbaum; Weinberg, Smith, Jackson & Gould DSM V criteria for mental disorders confusing Application of psych principles: Solution focused therapy, ACT for defusion strategies and self management, cognitive restructuring for managing emotions & task irrelevant thinking, Positive Psychology
The Naked Psychologist Meeting where we stripped our models bare At the essence what we are trying to do is support people to focus on what is important for their performance, with the energy that is needed no matter what, in training, in competition and in life Recognition that everyone is unique built from there past experiences meshed with their genetics too complicated to predict with 100% effectiveness and so one size fits all will not work Build this essence back up into a model that could be understood by athletes and coaches
If our Life was like a Rowing Boat Well Being/Resilience Performance Mindset Well Being: is like the boat itself, if it is broken or has holes in then it doesn't matter how good you are at rowing, we need to tend to the boat first. Performance Mindset: is like the oars and seat of the boat, it is what we use to direct and manage the speed of the boat.
Things that help our Boat Self Awareness Passion Purpose
HP Environment - Impact on Resilience Challenge & Performance Rowing s daily training environment and competition environment has plenty of challenge heavily focused on outcome Erg testing Prognostics training Trials Christmas Regatta Winter Series World Cups World Champs Olympics Support During these pressure tests we support athletes to reinforce their wellbeing/boat and enhance their rhythm/performance mindset: Reinforce their capability to cope with pressure when they succeed If they fail reinforce that they are still ok despite failure - challenge any assumptions leading to a fear of failure Uncover the thinking and behaviours that allows them to perform at their best Uncover the hooks away from this thinking (e.g. outcome thinking) Develop processes to unhook and reconnect their focus on what helps them
Positive Impact We have a positive impact on our athletes when we: Have a framework to frame our work Build an effective therapeutic relationship Treat athletes as individuals and unique Work within our competency as a psychologist Each Psychologist in our programme will have a different way of applying this framework, dependent on the coach and athletes they are working with and their own training, however they will still be building athletes focus and energy to perform in life, training and competition, still supporting athletes well being, growing their resilience and their performance mindset
