14 Launch round up A very warm welcome to our new Dementia Friends and a huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in the launch, Dementia Friends is now up and running! The 12 February launch was a great success kicking off with a 'mini' Dementia Friends information session on BBC Breakfast. There were also regional events in Sheffield, Bristol and Watford (pictured) letting people know about local information sessions, while our launch ambassadors, Jo Brand and Meera Syal, talked about what they'd learnt in their informatio n session. We even had support from the top, as Dementia Friends Champion, Laura Robinson, bravely ran an information session at Downing Street for David Cameron, with celebrity ambassadors Lynda Bellingham and Sally Lindsay, and members of the public. Finding Friends' information sessions and Champions' training You'll need to create a Dementia Friends' account or Champions' account on our new website to fi nd sessions and training. You'll need to do this even if you registered your interest in Dementia Friends and have received this e-newsletter before. Once you've registered, click through to find information or training sessions to book on to. As and when new information or training sessions come online they are posted instantly on dementiafriends.org.uk How does the booking process work? Dementia Friends Champions who register their interest in a particular Champions' training session (after creating a Champions' account) don t need to do anything else. A Dementia Friends Champions' trainer will be in touch to confirm that you have a place, or to advise that you ve been put on a waiting list. Champions' training sessions are removed from the site as they become fully booked. Dementia Friends need to create a Dementia Friends' account, book onto an available Friends' information session and then turn up at the advertised time. Full sessions are shown on the website, but you won t be able to book onto them. If there aren t local sessions showing yet then please keep checking back more are coming online all the time. How are we doing so far? We had nearly 900 people register to attend a Dementia Friends information session of which 511 are now signed onto a session. Dementia Friends information sessions are where people learn a little bit more about what it is like to live with dementia and then turn their understanding into action something practical to help people with dementia feel included in their communities (see Dementia Friends actions below).

15 Friends' information sessions are run by Dementia Friends Champions, volunteers who have taken our Champions' training to be confident and equipped to run information sessions in their local communities. The good news is that we have 398 Dementia Friends Champions signed up to training sessions and another 122 on the waiting list. And there are lots of other people expressing an interest in becoming a Dementia Friends Champion. This means that it shouldn t be too long before we have volunteer Champions set up to run many more Dementia Friends information sessions and the first Champions we trained when we were piloting Dementia Friends have started posting their public information sessions on the website. Next stage for the new website We had nearly 14,000 people visiting the new site on launch day of which nearly 12,500 were new people. This is a fantastic response thank you very much to everyone for making this happen. We've been delighted with the interest following launch and it has generated a large number of enquiries from the website. The team is working hard to get through the backlog so please do bear with us while we get on top of this. It has also given us the chance to try out the website properly with our users. You have been telling us about the things that could be made better. Thank you for all your comments. We will be taking them on board, together with the user testing we ve organised, and upgrading the website in March and April. Dementia Friends actions We asked you in our last newsletter about the Dementia Friends actions you were planning to take. The top three were: Challenge negative stereotypes and language about dementia Be more understanding and supportive of people with dementia Encourage other people to become Dementia Friends. This is a fantastic basis for this initiative. Many of you also sent in your own ideas that included wanting to know how to help people with dementia in your workplaces where you have contact with the public and creating memory books. They gave us great food for thought and we'll be reporting back on how you can do many of them in future newsletters. And finally We spotted this great article in the Daily Mail that we feel sums up the Dementia Friends initiative perfectly so we wanted to share it with you. 16 Losing track of time Dementia and the ageing prison population: treatment challenges and Across much of the developed world, the number of older men serving prison sentences has risen to unprecedented levels. Very little attention has been given to the management and treatment of inmates with dementia. This study reviews existing research, investigates the significant challenges of diagnosis and treatment within a correctional environment and identifies examples of good practice employed by a minority of establishments around the globe. The result being the following recommendations: 1. Routine screenings for older prisoners 2. Staff training a. Dementia awareness training for security officers b. Appointment of a designated lead for older prisoners in the health care team 3. Utilise the expertise of specialist external agencies 4. Promote information sharing and adopt clear procedures a. Clear referral processes b. Establish an online forum to facilitate dissemination of good practice 5 Low cost modifications to prison living environments For more information visit: publications/losing-track-of-time-pdf?view=standard
