10 Key Improvement Areas (KIA s) Initial analysis of the data provided in the National Quality Report 2011 demonstrates that national priorities are focused on four key areas: o o o o Skill development in continuous quality development Care planning (incorporating assessment) Support for carers Education provision

11 2011 recommendations for Federal and State Government: 1. Support system level, improvement focused change by supporting collaborative effort across the sector. 2. Promote and disseminate currently available resources and tools to support the spread of innovation and reduce duplication of improvement effort. 3. Investigate issues related to the provision of bereavement care.

17 Sign up phase Step 1: Specialist Palliative Care Service (SPCS) due to commence a new NSAP cycle, receives NSAP sign up kit. Step 2: SPCS nominate a NSAP executive sponsor and liaison officer. Step 3: SPCS complete and return NSAP sign up documentation, receives NSAP self assessment planning kit.

19 Step 2: SPCS nominate a NSAP executive sponsor and liaison officer Executive sponsor support is vital o Authority to make quality decisions & allocate resources o Understanding of & interest in day to day operations o Good to have involvement attend 1 or 2 meetings Note: don t aim too high or too low Executive Sponsor role includes o Required to sign & return NSAP service agreement o Endorsement of the self assessment report prior to submission o Endorsement of summary of key improvement areas o Receipt of organisations State, Territory & National comparative report from NSAP

20 Step 2: SPCS nominate a NSAP executive sponsor and liaison officer Liaison officer role is integral to self assessment success The nominated liaison officer: o o o o o o Approved by Executive Sponsor & direct line manager Broad knowledge of the service Day to day contact for your service Receive all communications from NSAP team & facilitation of information between service, MDAT & NSAP team Key role in preparation & forming MDAT Attend a training session prior to commencing self assessment

26 Step 4: SPCS obtain current knowledge of NSAP self assessment o Register to attend a self assessment workshop or o 1:1 training via webinar or teleconference. NSAP Self Assessment Planning Step 5: SPCS convene a self assessment planning meeting 1. Complete SPCS organisations quality culture assessment tool 2. Choose SPCS NSAP assessing model 3. Establish or identify SPCS Multidisciplinary Assessment Team (MDAT) members 4. Plan SPCS self assessment dates. Step 6: SPCS complete and return the Self Assessment planning documentation Step 7: SPCS NSAP executive sponsor receives, signs and returns NSAP service agreement. Liaison officer receives NSAP self assessing kit.

SERVICES & STREAMS: - Liaison officer coordinates all streams self assessment and the service self assessment - Coordinators at the streams level are supported by a liaison officer at the service level. Streams coordinators organise each streams self assessment. Liaison Officer coordinates the combined self assessment for the service
