4 Goals of Center of Excellence Foster population science integration into basic and clinical programs of SKCC (Programmatic Integration). Identify Focus Areas ( Themes of Promise ) for Research and Training, and develop capacity for external funding in these areas, leveraging expertise across clinical, basic, and population sciences (Scientific Integration). Provide education and internship opportunities to students and trainees in cancer risk, prevention, and control (Training Goal). Implement cancer education and awareness programs in the community to translate knowledge and research for community benefit (Service Goal). Address cancer-related needs of the SKCC catchment area (Service Goal).
5 Research Arm - Goals Foster collaboration across research disciplines (clinical, basic, population, genetics, health policy, ethics) for novel initiatives in cancer risk, prevention, and control. Organized in three focus areas for feasibility and maximal approach to garner external grant funding. Apply for external grants within one-year of inception. Promote collaborative publications across disciplines. Results of focus areas are expected to inform and collaborate with training and community programs arms of the CoE. 7/26/2016 5

Focus Area #2: Global Primary Prevention Strategies Encompasses studies of nutrition, tobacco control, built environment, emerging models of primary care and prevention, new immigrant populations, lifecourse perspective for cancer prevention Focus Area #3: Survivorship Issues Across the Lifecourse Geriatric oncology, psychosocial oncology, young adult survivors, family and community needs, cancer control 7/26/2016 6
7 Training Arm - Goals Provide educational and research internships to trainees of all levels (high school, undergraduate, graduate, medical, residency, fellowship) with a focus in cancer research. Enhance collaborations of SKCC Consortium with schools and universities to foster interest of underrepresented minorities in science, medicine, and health policy. Provide long-term mentorship to trainees for educational and career guidance. Engage trainees with research arm working groups to observe and participate in research collaborations. Engage trainees in community programs arm to provide first-hand experience with community education.
8 Community Education and Programs Arm - Goals Establish community education programs to benefit the SKCC catchment area. Disseminate current knowledge of cancer risk, prevention, and control to the greater community. Provide immediate impact in the SKCC catchment area with emerging research findings. Engage Oncology Support Services of TJUH for enhanced community awareness and initiatives. Collaborate with research and education arms to identify how to translate research into community awareness and educational efforts. Engage stakeholders in the Center of Excellence to maximize impact in respective communities.
