Philip Grant s beloved wife Liza developed frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in her early 50s a rare form of dementia affecting personality and behaviour. This changed the former Chief Executive s life forever. Tragically, there were no treatments that could save Liza but the Dementia Revolution is giving Philip and his family hope. They have joined the Dementia Revolution... will you stand with them? Liza s diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia was a huge shock and followed five years of anguish. The disease made her hostile and she lost her inhibitions and empathy, such a change from the wife and mum we once knew. The reality that there are no treatments was a hard one to face. I d never realised dementia could affect someone so young. She was only 53. Apart from the emotional difficulty of coming to terms with Liza s diagnosis there were practical considerations: I needed to work to support the family but how could I head off every morning knowing that Liza s illness could lead her to do and say things that might harm her? The boys were away at school which meant that Liza was on her own at home; she could no longer drive but she could and did walk out of the house on her own. I would receive phone calls at work to say that she had been found on a busy road, or completely lost on a country lane. In the last year of her life, she stopped speaking and could no longer recognise me or our boys. It was heartbreaking. The Dementia Revolution is so timely because progress is starting to be made and incredible initiatives like the UK Dementia Research Institute are taking shape. To be part of the Dementia Revolution and for me to support its incredible work, gives me and my family hope.
