1 RESEARCH ARTICLE TAES 141: ISSO Nineteen new species of Taperinha (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae) Paul H. Freytag Emeritus Professor, Department of Entomology,University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky Abstract Nineteen new species are added to the Genus Taperinha Linnavouri from South America. The new species are Taperinha nuda, T. trigona, T. angulata, T. hamata, T. media, T. ungulata, T. lobata, T. anisota, T. lapayensis, T. odonta from Colombia; T. retusa, T. zanolae from French Guiana; T. dozieri, T. longicornis from Ecuador; T. elongata from Suriname; T. stypa from Venezuela; and T. bulba, T. stenostyla, T. peruviana from Peru. A key to the species known from Colombia is included. Key Words: Hemiptera, Cicadellidae, Deltocephalinae, Taperinha, South America, new species. INTRODUCTION The genus Taperinha was described by Linnavuori (1959) and included 3 new species. Linnavuori & DeLong (1978) added 3 more new species. Zanol (1988, 1989, 1997, and 2004) added 17 new species. In this paper 19 new species are described, all species in the genus are from South America, and only one species (T. punctata Linnavouri) is also found in the southern part of Central America (Costa Rica & Panama). With the new species there are now 42 species known in this genus. A key to the species found in Colombia is included after the description of the new species. The species of Taperinha can be identified by the following external characters: The crown of the head is usually light yellow with two large dark spots, with a distinct anterior margin. The spots are usually black, but can also be brown, red or orange. The forewings have extra cross veins on the costal margin, and with or without a saddle-like pattern across the claval areas. The underside including the face is dark brown or black. They are usually from 4 to 5 mm. in length, and somewhat oval in dorsal view. These characters are somewhat distinct and unusual for species in the Deltocephalinae in South America. The acronyms used in this paper are the following: IHVL = Instituto von Humboldt, Villa de Leyva, Colombia UKYL = University of Kentucky Collection, Lexington, Kentucky, USA MNHN = Musėum national d Histoire naturelle, Paris, France FSCA = Florida State Collection of Arthropods, Gainesville, Florida, USA MUSM = Museo de Historia Natural, Lima, Peru. A list of the species of this genus and the known distribution, and a key to the species known to occur in Colombia are given after the descriptions of the new species.
