7 Sexual Sadism & Sadistic Rape The DSM-IV-TR defines sexual sadism as: 1) Recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving acts (real, not simulated) in which the psychological or physical suffering (including humiliation) on the victim is sexually exciting to the person. Symptoms must be present for at least 6 months. 2) The person have acted on these sexual urges with a non-consenting person, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty ( ). History of the term Sadism Marquis de Sade, in his writings depicted torture, cruelty and killing for erotic purposes Krafft-Ebing, in his 1886 Psychopathia Sexualis, defined sadism as: The experience of sexual, pleasurable sensations (including orgasm) produced by acts of cruelty or bodily punishment. It may also consist of an innate desire to humiliate, hurt, wound or even destroy others to create pleasure for oneself Eulenberg, in 1911 expanded this definition to include psychological as well as physical pain (PsychDirect, 2005). Sadistic Rape: When the rapist transforms anger and power so that aggression becomes sexual and thus eroticized for him, the intentional maltreatment of the non-consenting victim is sexually gratifying, and the torment, distress, and anguish of the victim increases the rapist s level of pleasure (Groth, 2005). 7

8 The Sadistic Rapist Sadistic rapists are anger-excitation rapists Live out sadistic sexual fantasies on unwilling victims Victims are symbolic to the rapist have preferences More interested in punishing and humiliating his victims Depersonalize their victim Usually develops an MO; may take souvenirs Fantasy evolves, may make torture kit This type of rape often ends in murder SADISTIC RAPISTS More difficult to determine motivations and fantasies that are often not revealed 30-50% Rapists are categorized as sexual sadists White male- more sadistic and socialized as the aggressor Abused (Hickey, 2006 & Mitchell, 2005) Often solitary personalities and is rare to openly show signs of violence (Hickey, 2006). Co-Morbidity Sadism is commonly found in association with other paraphilias In one study 18% of sadists were also masochistic, 46% had also engaged in rape, 21% in exhibitionism, 25% in voyeurism and frottage, and 33% in pedophilia Sexual sadism, combined with Anti-Social Personality Disorder frequently produces harmful behavior 8
