Arguing that the novel is not pessimistic because Golding believes rules and order can help humans remain good, she cites the actions and behaviours of Simon, Piggy and Ralph as examples. Nonetheless, the analysis fails to achieve its desired purpose. Without adequately considering the broader context of the story and the symbolic implications of what ultimately happens to these characters, the candidate s response seems biased and superficial. 18

However, the case it presents to defend Jack s actions, that he has no part in the murder of Simon and Piggy and the attempted murder of Ralph, is not entirely convincing. Details are sometimes misrepresented or distorted (e.g. Jack moved away to the far end of the island to avoid confrontation with Piggy, and Piggy initiates a fight at Castle Rock) to fit the argument. Further, there is no attempt to substantiate the claim that Jack s hunt for Ralph near the end of the novel is only a game. 22

It would have been better to have named the film at the beginning and to have had a tighter focus. After all, the nature of the tragedy is quite clear in Anna Karenina. Attempts to answer such a broad and open question with discussion of one film only, and from a limited number of screen shots, result in a rather superficial and limited discussion. The candidate struggles to grasp the format of the genre. It touches on a number of cinematic techniques like lighting and use of camera angle and editing, but the discussion is random and too general. 32

Introduction of the character that is a lesbian is rather abrupt and unconvincing. The use of the cliff as the symbol and the setting is deliberate and original. Character development is missing and details and description are lacking. The discussion of the relationship is lacking details and a climax. The plot is rather predictable and thin: it tells rather than shows, with ideas perhaps too obvious to engage the reader. Fulfills the task to some extent. 38
