Man of Steel

Objective After reviewing the elements and structure of introductory and concluding paragraphs, students will demonstrate understanding of the writing process by applying these ideas to their own essays.

Objective You will: Understand how to write an introductory and a concluding paragraph. Show me by: Writing an introduction and conclusion for your Superman essay.

Man of Steel Essay Prompt Subject Context & Situation Task Command term Framing Questions The literature of a culture is a reflection of its core values. Heroic tales specifically reveal the hopes, fears, aspirations, and apprehensions of the society that created them. Analyze the movie, Man of Steel as it applies to contemporary American society. What qualities does Superman have that make him a hero? What do his struggles, internal and external, reveal about American culture and its people?

Basic Essay Outline Introduction: TAG, General background info, Thesis Statement Body Paragraphs: BASIC Summary 5-6 sentences that only include plot that is relevant to the prompt Analysis Paragraphs (Double P.Q.E. or P.I.E.) Point Topic sentence Q Quote or specific textual evidence E Explanation (connect the Q to the P) Conclusion: TAG/credit to the author Author and title mandatory Evaluation of purpose Concluding sentence

Summary Paragraph Your summary should be no more than 5-6 sentences. Ideas should be broad and general. Specifics belong in your analysis paragraphs. Include: Setting and basic situation/conflict (1 sentence) ONLY characters that will be included in your analysis ONLY plot events that are relevant to your analysis Think about which themes you plan to discuss Origin/Immigration Identity Terrorism Heroism (what type of hero/what makes him a hero) Etc.

Body Paragraphs Topic Sentences Body paragraphs take an aspect of the overall topic and then expand upon it in detail. Some aspects we discussed: Origin/Immigration Identity Terrorism Heroism (what type of hero/what makes him a hero) Etc. Choose how you want to organize your ideas and then write the first sentence (topic sentence) for each of your body paragraphs (3-4 sentences).

Example: Overall Topic of the Paper Debate is used as a vehicle for allegory in Middle English Poetry. I grouped ideas by the structural elements of a debate and how they are used in each poem. Argument Rebuttal Moderator Strategy/Winning

Aspect: Strategy and Winning the Debate As the poem progresses and each bird considers the other s argument, both become consumed solely with winning the debate. Topic Sentence Nightingale used every trick she s learned all year and when she was at a loss her cunning helped her find an answer that would pass as sound (697). Insert explanation and connection here. The Owl never distorted the truth and instead puzzled long on how she might / best answer, keeping to the right (464). Insert explanation and connection here. Nothing is decided by the poem s end as the speaker does not follow the birds when they leave to seek out Nicholas of Guildford. Insert explanation and connection here. By the end of the poem, the two birds have so completely confounded the issue with their manipulating and mud-slinging that the outcome is of little consequence. This is the concluding idea that demonstrates the connection among the details and examples in the paragraph.

Introductory Paragraph TAG Title: Man of Steel (italicized) Author (Director): Zack Snyder Genre: Film General Background Information Use the context and situation from the prompt Reference the big picture ideas explored in class Thesis Statement Use the words in the task portion of the prompt to write your thesis.

Concluding Paragraph Your conclusion should mirror your introduction, but should not merely restate/rephrase it. TAG Author (director) and title mandatory Credit to the author (director) Evaluation of purpose Why should the reader care about the points you made in your essay? Concluding sentence Wrap er up! These do not need to be separate sentences. How does this question specifically apply to this unit? (OMG we ve beat this question to DEATH this year )
