2 Handout 2: Cue, Meaning, and Response Cue Common Meaning Response Rooting, fist in mouth, I m hungry; I need Nurse, feed, provide a safe licking lips comfort object to suck on (e.g., Arched back I feel overstimulated or uncomfortable pacifier) Change activity; create a more peaceful environment; hold and comfort your child Frown I m worried Comfort your child with a favorite blanket; hold your child; change activity Smile or laughter I m happy, content Continue the activity until your child gives you a cue to stop Looking away I m done Stop the activity and give your child some time to relax Yawn, eyes unfocused I m tired Begin to make a transition into your child s nap or sleep routine

Eyes turned away from face or object Calm, relaxed body; smooth movements Unsettled body, agitated movements Regular, smooth breathing Hiccupping, shielding face Smiles, coos, joyful expressions Frowns, grimaces, protests vocally Holds onto or grasps person or object Turns away, kicks, arches back

5 Handout 5: Six States of Consciousness Answer Key and Information Quiet/calm, alert Alert, bright eyes; wide-open gaze; comfortable body language; baby looks and listens carefully and is open for social interaction. This is the best time to interact with your baby. Active alert Eyes open and looking around; increased movement of arms and legs; subtle sounds. Typically comes before fussing, crying, or drowsy states. This state is often a signal for need of a change (such as feeding or changing positions). Crying Drowsiness Active sleep (light sleep) Eyes often shut; fidgety body language. Crying is normal and is the baby s way of attracting your attention. Sometimes it s a signal that the baby s limits have been reached. Given several minutes, babies can often soothe themselves, but may need you to provide comfort. Eyes unfocused; small facial movements; irregular breathing. Drowsiness serves as a transition both into and out of sleep. When babies are drowsy, they are slow to respond. If left alone, they may go to sleep or gradually awaken. This is a good time for snuggling and soothing. Eyes often flutter under the eye lids; slight movements and facial expressions. Babies may go between active and quiet sleep cycles. Because sleep is so important to storing the day s learning, it s a good idea to make the environment as comfortable for sleeping as you can. Quiet sleep (deep sleep) Eyes closed; still, regular breathing; settled body. A baby in quiet sleep is generally difficult to wake up. He or she will quickly return to sleep if awakened. This is not a good time to stimulate or try to interact with a baby.
