How Hypnosis Feels Since everyone has experienced light levels of hypnosis at different times, don t be surprised if you don t feel hypnotized. All that is required to be hypnotized is a motivation to be hypnotized, concentration, imagination, relaxation, and the motivation. During hypnosis, you will remain conscious of your surroundings. Some of the bodily sensations you may experience are: Tingling in your fingertips. A sense of numbness or limb distortion. A sense of being light and floating away from your body. A heavy feeling like you are sinking. A sense of energy moving through your body. Feelings of emotions. Fluttering eyelids. An increase or decrease in salivation. When you notice these sensations, do not become alarmed or you may shock yourself right out of your trance. Just expect the trance to occur gradually and it will. Suggestions stay with some individuals indefinitely, P a g e 1 6
others need reinforcement. The effects of hypnosis are cumulative: The more the techniques are practiced and posthypnotic suggestions are brought into play, the more permanent the results become. A special note about falling asleep: One other sensation that comes to mind is a feeling of tiredness. People ask me all the time: Is hypnosis still effective if you fall asleep? And my answer is always the same, a resounding NO! It s important to understand that HYPNOSIS IS NOT SLEEP and SLEEP IS NOT HYPNOSIS. Here s how to better understand what I mean by that. The activity in your brain is measured by brain wave frequencies called Hertz. There are five main levels of brain wave frequencies: Delta: 0-4 Hz This is the level of mind associated with profound levels of sleep. It s a regenerative state. Theta: 4-8 Hz This is a state of mind that is between waking and sleeping, not quite asleep, but not really very conscious either. The P a g e 2 6
brain is functioning is very slow. It is considered to be in trance. Theta brings forward heightened receptivity, flashes of dreamlike imagery, inspiration, and your long-forgotten memories. Theta can bring you deep states of meditation. A sensation of "floating." And, because it is an expansive state, in Theta, you may feel your mind expand beyond the boundaries of your body. You re not really able to focus your attention on anything external, nor carry on a conversation. Alpha: 8-12 Hz A relaxed state. A person in this state feels relaxed, centered, at peace with the world. It s a place where you can get excellent ideas. Your awareness expands. Fresh creative energy begins to flow. Fears vanish. You experience a liberating sense of peace and well-being. SMR (Sensor Motor Response) or Low Beta Brainwaves: Hz - SMR brain wave frequencies make individuals feel more present and in the moment. Relaxed focus, improved attentive abilities. Beta: Hz - Beta is your normal thinking state, your active external awareness and thought process. The mental activity normally associated with Beta waves is the active awareness state P a g e 3 6
that we experience from day to day, when you take an exam, play sports, give a presentation, analyze and organize information and other activities where mental alertness and high levels of concentration are key to your success. Beta Brainwaves kick in when we think logically, solve problems, and confront external stimuli. The best brainwave frequency for meditation and hypnosis is somewhere between Alpha and Theta. At this level of mind, you will still be consciously aware and remember all the information that you heard during hypnosis. You are in touch with your subconscious mind. You have somewhat of a feeling of detachment, not quite to the level of sleep, but the body is deeply relaxed. The brain is more creative and intelligent here in this state. Intuition is open, you are more receptive, inspired, and may experience long-time forgotten memories. It is in this state Alpha-Theta, that new programming can more easily be accepted by the subconscious mind. Some can reach this state quite easily and quickly. Some take a bit longer. Again, how you ll know you have reached that state is based on the bodily sensations that I outlined above. I d like to take this opportunity to address my second most frequently asked question. Can I be hypnotized? Stated another way, I can t be hypnotized. Or I don t think I went under. or No one can hypnotize ME because I have such a strong mind. These all basically say the same thing and that is that you P a g e 4 6
haven t really gotten the true understanding yet of what hypnosis really is. Going back to the first step, do you remember when we talked about the definition of hypnosis and we broke it down to fact that it s a state of increased receptivity? And now more recently, I explained that in Theta you experience that increase in receptivity and depth of trance and Alpha provides the bridge, or the link, to the conscious thinking mind so that you can actually remember the contents of your meditation. You actually pass through these states at least twice a day. Once when you first wake up in the morning and once when you go to sleep at night. So, whether you can be hypnotized or not, is simply a matter of getting in touch with that state. Today, as part of the curriculum for today s training, I want you to visit the page on my site that has three Suggestibility Tests I would do with clients sitting in my office. Suggestibility Tests offer you an opportunity to see just how quickly and easily you can be hypnotized and accept suggestion. Just take the tests, and see what happens. The tests only last about a minute each. For best results with each suggestibility test, get calm and comfortable without anything to distract you. Really focus and concentrate all of your attention on just that one thing. Allow your creative and imaginative mind to take over when taking each test. When you have finished, that will conclude our Step for today. P a g e 5 6
Next Step In the next step, Step 5: Relaxation and Breathing that you will receive in day or two you will learn the proper method for breathing during hypnosis. So, make sure to keep an eye on your ! I ll see you then! Sincerely, Victoria Gallagher P.S.
