1 Breathe easier Philips WhisperFlow CPAP system provides non-invasive respiratory care designed for EMS sense and simplicity

2 Designed for EMS When caregivers respond to an emergency, time is essential and assessing a patient s vital signs is crucial. If a patient is having difficulty breathing, perhaps due to a critical illness or injury, one treatment option is endotracheal intubation. However, intubation may lead to complications, such as infection and damage to a patient s airway, and it is associated with longer hospital stays and increased treatment costs when compared with non-invasive ventilation. 1,2 As an alternative to intubation for some patients, Philips offers the WhisperFlow continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) system. Non-invasive and easy to use Lightweight yet rugged, the Philips WhisperFlow CPAP system is a portable, simple, cost-effective and non-invasive alternative to intubation. WhisperFlow needs no calibration and can be quickly deployed to treat conscious patients with respiratory distress. Simply connect the system, apply the mask, and help improve the patient s ability to breathe comfortably during transport. Longer oxygen run times WhisperFlow is ideal for EMS use because it conserves oxygen while delivering therapeutic CPAP with superb pressure control. On a 425 litre oxygen cylinder, WhisperFlow fixed-flow systems may last two-to-three times longer than some competitors during transport. 3 Should your protocol require greater FIO2 flexibility, Philips also offers a variable flow system for appropriate titration. Patient comfort and therapy acceptance The WhiperFlow system provides a variety of durable and comfortable hospital-grade ventilation masks that minimise leaks and maintain comfort. Stable mask position and minimal leaks mean a more consistent and reliable application of CPAP. Greater patient comfort can lead to better patient acceptance and ultimately a greater chance at clinical success. Continuous and consistent pressure Patients who require CPAP are already fighting to breathe, so their CPAP system should minimise the work associated with breathing. WhisperFlow systems feature technology that can reduce work-of-breathing for patients using CPAP. WhisperFlow offers a variety of isobaric positive end-expiry pressure (PEEP) valves to maintain a constant and consistent level of pressure control to provide the C in CPAP. Unlike ondemand SCBA type systems, oxygen at a controlled pressure is available and continuously flowing to support a patient s demand for a breath - instantaneously and with minimal effort. As alveoli in the patient s lungs are recruited, a patient can experience inproved oxygenation, easier breathing, and vital signs improvement. 4-6 Fixed low flow CPAP Fixed CPAP The WhisperFlow system provides patient-effective care plus cost-effective solutions by allowing us to get the most from our oxygen tanks and exchange our masks with the hospital. Marvin Wayne, MD, FACEP, FAAEM Medical Program Director Bellingham & Whatcom Counties Variable CPAP

3 Designed for the entire respiratory care cycle As the leader in non-invasive ventilation (NIV) solutions, Philips offers not only WhisperFlow but also hospital CPAP and BiPAP systems with the popular V60, Vision, Focus and Trilogy non-invasive ventilators. With Philips non-invasive ventilation solutions, patients receive seamless respiratory care to and through the hospital. Using Philips masks with your WhisperFlow CPAP system can facilitate clinically effective and economically beneficial hospital exchange programs while enhancing a fast, simple transition to hospital NIV systems. With the compatibilty provided by Philips NIV solutions, treatment disruptions, such as mask fitting and adjustment, may be minimised to ensure more consistent therapy for a patient. This seamless approach to NIV may not only save precious time but it may also avoid costs associated with using an additional mask when a patient is transported to the hospital. With WhisperFlow, patients can be seamlessly transferred from EMS to Philips hospital CPAP and BiPAP Systems. Consistent and continuous pressure supports the patient s therapeutic breathing cycle and can reduce a patient s work-ofbreathing.
