2 Presentation objectives 1) Participants will understand Truth Initiative s College Programs and the disproportionate impact of tobacco related health disparities on the college communities. 2) Participants will learn various strategies that the colleges used to address tobacco as a social justice issues and mobilize support from students, faculty and staff for a tobacco-free campus policy 3) Each participant will be able to see different actions that fit into assessment methodologies, student activism and education, and support tobacco cessation in order to see policy change on their campus.

5 Why a college initiative? Majority of community colleges and HBCUs do not have a 100% tobacco or smoke-free campus policy. Tobacco use policies are not priorities on HBCU and community college campuses. These institutions tend to serve: Low SES First-generation college attendees Students of color

6 Top-down and bottom-up approach Support HBCUs and CC with resources and technical assistance Engage and educate HBCU and CC college leaders and decision makers

7 Grantee Core Elements Develop task force Assess Education and awareness campaigns Identify a culturally appropriate cessation plan Develop policy recommendations to administration

8 Current Grantees Providing funding and technical assistance to 96 colleges in 29 states, Washington DC, and the US Virgin Islands

9 Reach Reaching more than 700,000 students and 57,000 employees

10 Social justice, tobacco, & young adults The tobacco industry s predatory marketing tactics target vulnerable communities and young adults Higher initiation rates among low-income young adults Students with an associate degree are almost twice as likely to smoke compared to students with an undergraduate degree Students are more likely to initiate during young adulthood and among African American smokers between ages 18-25, 94% smoke menthol cigarettes.

20 Hookah Hookah is becoming more popular with young people. They are popping up in restaurants and bars near college and university campuses During a typical 1-hour hookah session, a person may inhale as much smoke as smoking 100 or more cigarettes.

21 Why is the tobacco free HBCU initiative important? Our students Promote a healthy campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and administrators to live, work, and learn. Creating a norm for our next generation our surrounding communities Tobacco-free policies are trending, so let s keep the momentum going
