1 Ottawa County YAS Report for White Youth Introduction The three race/ethnicity reports are an addendum to the Ottawa County Youth Assessment Survey (YAS) featuring either the responses of White, Hispanic or Other youth alone. These categories were created based on each student s response to the question: Which of the following best describes your race/ethnicity? If a student selected Hispanic or Latino, their responses are included in the Ottawa County YAS Report for Hispanic Youth If a student selected White, their responses are included in the Ottawa County YAS Report for White Youth If a student selected American Indian or Alaska ative; Asian; Black or African American; ative Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; or Multi-racial, their responses are included in the Ottawa County YAS Report for Other Youth Since the YAS has been administered every odd year since, there are now six survey years of data to more closely examine the current status and historical trends in both risky and beneficial behavior among these racial/ethnic groups in Ottawa County. Selected Highlights of this YAS Sub-Group Report While looking through each respective race/ethnicity report you may notice some of the following: White students have lower depression and suicidal behavior proportions when compared to both Hispanic and Other students. Hispanic students are trending negatively in 3 of the 4 depression and suicide behaviors. White students tend to have the lowest proportion of drug and alcohol abuse. In comparison, Hispanic students tend to have the highest proportion in these areas. Hispanic and Other students tend to describe their neighborhood more negatively than White students. Hispanic students have significantly less students in the healthy weight category and significantly more students in the overweight and obese categories, when compared to White and Other students. White students tend to have a higher proportion involved in community activities when compared to Hispanic and Other students. The fewest YAS measures are moving in the right direction for Hispanic students. Of the 167 YAS measures that have enough years of data to test for statistically significant linear trends, 38.3% of measures have beneficial trends for Hispanic students compared to 49.7% and 56.9% for Other and White students, respectively. Conversely, for both White and Hispanic students, about 12% of measures have negative trends while 10% have negative trends for Other students. Considering all of the sub-group reports together, male students had the most measures trending in a beneficial direction (65.8%) while Hispanic students had the least (38.3%). Conversely, measures trending in an unbeneficial direction were most prevalent among female students (19.2%) and least prevalent among male students (9%). 2 Interpreting the Results Data Presentation The data for White youth are displayed in five column areas: Issue Area survey questions are organized into issue areas the number of White students who responded to each question Responses starting with and going back to ; the number in parentheses beneath each year indicates the total number of White respondents for the respective year White responses by Gender White responses by Grade Level Issue Area Three Different Categories Responses by Gender by Grade I stopped doing some usual activities during the past 12 months because I felt so sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more in a row % (860) 21.4% (699) 19.6% (501) 18.3% (323) 17.6% (227) 21.6% (321) 29.6% (608) 11.3% (248) 16.9% (288) 24. Data Cells The number beneath each year is different in the optional Sexual Behavior section of the report since some school systems elected not to include those questions. An in any cell of the Responses columns indicates that the question was not asked in that year or has been changed enough that it is no longer comparable. An ** indicates that results are suppressed in any sub category columns when there are fewer than 5 respondents. In each of the report s data cells (Figure 1), the top number is the weighted percent of White students reporting the behavior and the bottom number is the count of White students who answered yes to the corresponding question. The number in parentheses beneath each year in the Responses section indicates the total number of White respondents for the respective year. 3 The results given for the Gender and Grade categories show only data. Each data cell (Figure 2) contains the results that correspond to those White students who reported the question out of the total White respondents within each gender or grade level. In, 29.6% of White females (608 of all White female respondents) versus 11.3% of White males (248 of all White male respondents) reported feeling sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more in a row. Margin of Error Use caution when comparing the results of White students between any given survey year, gender or grade level. Because the YAS surveys a representative sample of youth among the whole population of 8 th, 10 th and 12 th graders in Ottawa County, there is a small margin of error around each result; percentages that have small differences may actually not be statistically different from one another. See page 10 of the YAS report ( for more information about Margin of Error and the YAS. Methods The methodology of these reports is similar to the county-wide YAS report (see the Methods section of the YAS report ( for additional details regarding the methods of data preparation and analysis, as well as the limitations inherent in the YAS survey process). In the YAS there is an overrepresentation of 8 th graders and an underrepresentation of 10 th and 12 th graders. To account for this, each student s data are assigned a post-stratification weight to improve how well the results actually represent student responses from participating schools. This is done by comparing the actual number of respondents in 8th, 10th and 12th grades per school to the reported headcount for those grade levels per school. While this report only contains responses from White students, the possibility for a skewed representation by grade still existed. Due to this, the same post-stratification weights used in the countywide YAS report are used in the gender reports to make the data more comparable to Ottawa County s true proportion of White, Hispanic and Other students. All percentages in this report are weighted; all student counts are not weighted. Since the questions in the Sexual Behavior section were optional for schools, not all students had these questions. The number of White respondents, and the post-stratification weight used for each respondent, is different for this section. Once a subset of the data was created to contain only the desired race/ethnicity, the same analysis was run on the data as the county-wide YAS. This produced population proportion estimates for each behavior included in the YAS as well as linear trends for each behavior that had at least 3 years worth of data. Statistically significant linear trends are indicated by the symbols in the table below. See page 11 of the YAS report ( for more information about use of linear trend analysis and the YAS. 3
