Prof. Dr. Abdul Razak Phone: ext hashi@iiu.edu.my Semester 1 only This course explores the problems of drug abuse globally and in Malaysia in particular. Notice will also be brought on the Law relating to drug trafficking in Malaysia.Throughout the course, special consideration will be given to the importance of the pharmacology of each drug or drug group with emphasis on mechanism of action, addictive potential, psychological and physiological dependence. Also considered are the rationale of drug treatment and also other modalities of treatment. Also included will be the abuse of prescription drugs, abuse of drugs in sports and social drugs. The teachings and warnings in the Qur an and Hadith will also be highlighted. The objectives of this course are to: 1. highlight the problems of drug abuse globally and in Malaysia. 2. describe the pharmacology of the drugs involved. 3. make students realise that there are other kinds of drug abuses; social drugs, drugs in sports, and prescription drugs. 4. expose students to the treatment modalities available and the role of the PEMADAM Rehabilitation Centres (Pusat Serenti) 5. highlight also the teachings in the Qur an and Hadith on using illegal and intoxicating drugs. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. identify the social problems in drug abuse (C1, A1, CTPS1, LS1) 2. discuss the pharmacology and potential addiction of the drug or 2
