1 MAY During National Prevention Week, thousands across the U.S. attend events and help raise awareness about the importance of prevention substance use and promoting positive mental health. Each day of National Prevention Week focuses on a specific health theme. The themes for National Prevention Week 2017 are: Monday: Prevention of Youth Tobacco Tuesday: Prevention of Underage Drinking & Alcohol Misuse Wednesday: Prevention of Prescription & Opioid Drug Misuse Thursday: Prevention of Illicit Drug Use & Youth Marijuana Use Friday: Prevention of Suicide Saturday: Promotion of Mental Health & Wellness

4 UNDERAGE DRINKING & ALCOHOL MISUSE 80% of 10th graders in 2016 did not use alcohol 1 in the past month. Youth who drink alcohol are more likely to experience legal problems. 2 F Students who binge drink (5+ drinks/occasion) are 3 times more likely than those who don t to get mostly D s and 3 F s on their report cards. >4,300 deaths Are caused by excessive drinking among underage 2 youth each year. 1. COMMONLY ABUSED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS Opioid (Pain Killers) Anabolic Steriods Stimulants Sedatives Over-the-Counter Medications DANGERS! Highly addictive Prescription and over-the-counter drugs are dangerous when taken with alcohol or mixed with other drugs Can slow one s breathing to dangerous levels Accidental overdose 2 MYTH Prescription drugs are safe because they were prescribed by a doctor. FACT Taking prescription drugs for non-medical use can be just as dangerous and addictive as taking illegal street drugs. 1. 10 SUICIDE A W ARENESS Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young adults. 1 Teens who are dependent on alcohol are at a greater risk for suicide. 2 trauma of losing a loved one to suicide, but may themselves be at high risk for suicide 3 and emotional problems. Most suicidal individuals desperately want to live; they are just unable to see alternatives to 3 their problems. F EMAL ES MALES Males are 4 times more likely to die by suicide than females. SUICIDE IS PREVENTABLE By taking the time to notice and reach out to a peer, you can be the beginning of a positive solution. Female teens who abuse alcohol are 6 times as likely to be depressed than others who do not. This is a risk for suicide. 1 4 Seek help to address the related problems such as depression and other health issues, anger, and substance abuse. 5 6 YOU ARE NOT ALONE #SAVETEENS! 1.
