2 SYMPOSIUM PURPOSES Provide a forum for building awareness and promoting open discussion regarding prevention, care and treatment of viral hepatitis. 19 ROY VAN HORNE MEMORIAL AWARDS
20 In Memoriam Roy van Horne became infected with Hepatitis C while serving in the Vietnam War and was successfully treated in Realizing how many others were infected with this disease, particularly fellow service men and women, Roy decided to devote his time to bringing awareness of hepatitis C, education, and support to the veterans and the community at large. Roy was the founder of the HepCats Support Group and a tireless advocate. Sadly, Roy passed away in October His death was a huge loss to the HCV advocacy and support community. His kind of passion and energy are rare and beautiful and his loss has left a deep wound, however, he would not want us to languish or become lost in our grief. Roy s desire was to bring hope and care to those in need and in that spirit we will introduce at this year s symposium the Roy Van Horne Memorial Award. The Roy Van Horne Memorial Award is presented to an individual who has exhibited outstanding leadership and advocacy in viral hepatitis in Minnesota. The award reflects the dedication to advocacy and support Roy exhibited for those with hepatitis. 20
