3 Vision and Mission Vision As breastfeeding advocates we represent childbearing women and their families. We believe that breastfeeding is natural and provides the normal nourishment for infants, benefiting both mother and child. We come together in this coalition to provide a strong unified voice in the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding in Oneida, Vilas, Forest and Price Counties. Mission Improving the health of our communities by protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding in Oneida, Forest, Vilas and Price Counties.

4 Goal Increase the exclusivity, incidence, and duration of breastfeeding in Oneida, Forest, Vilas and Price counties in accordance with the U. S. Healthy People 2020 Breastfeeding Maternal & Child Health Objectives, Healthiest Wisconsin 2020, and in collaboration with local Community Health Improvement Plans.

5 Work Plan Progress 2014 Objective 1: Strengthen the support for breastfeeding within the health care systems of Oneida, Vilas, Forest and Price counties and normalize breastfeeding. (Health Care Systems Supporting Breastfeeding) Objective 2: Normalize breastfeeding and empower families to make truly informed infant feeding choices by advocating for breastfeeding and increasing the availability of and access to breastfeeding resources in the community. (Community Systems Supporting Breastfeeding) Objective 3: Strengthen the sustainability & position of the Northwoods Breastfeeding Coalition. (Coalition s Position and Promotion of Breastfeeding)

6 Work Plan Progress Objective 1: Health Care Systems Supporting Breastfeeding Letter of intent submitted for Security Health Plan: Health Community Grants-Developing and Implementing a Breastfeeding Friendly Physician Office Program Were not invited to submit a proposal Coalition seeking additional funding to pursue this effort Received letters of support from GLITC & Price County Public Health. Breastfeeding classes are being offered as part of the pre-natal classes at St. Mary s Hospital. Price County-maintained BF Peer Program

7 Work Plan Progress Objective 1: Health Care Systems Supporting Breastfeeding Outreach to local pharmacists -Barb Stoddard has been educating pharmacists on breastfeeding, our resource guide and Coalition Continuing Education Session provided to members and health care professionals on topic of Opiate Use in Pregnancy and Lactation On Dec. 2, 2014, Dr. Rocky Webb will present at annual meeting. Member passed her IBCLC re-examination requirement Continue to meet with St. Mary s Hospital administrator on supporting BF Improved referrals from HCP (Price County)

8 Work Plan Progress Objective 2 : Community Systems Supporting Breastfeeding Successfully completed our grant to pilot 10 Steps to Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Centers with 6 child care centers. All 6 became BFCCC (3 in Oneida County, 2 in Vilas County and 1 in Merrill) Center listings posted to Coalition website Northwoods LEAN Coalition of Oneida & Vilas Counties: participating member Worksite Wellness Committee of Northwoods LEAN: Participate on the committee & hoping to receive funding for BF and worksites WI Breastfeeding Coalition: we continue to participate as member; our Treasurer serves as their Secretary and is on the Executive Committee Yearly update & distribution of our BF Resource Guide Website maintained with agendas, minutes, resource guide, journal articles, etc. Maintain our Facebook Page for families & health care professionals

10 Work Plan Progress Objective 2 : Community Systems Supporting Breastfeeding Breast Pump Provision-working to improve access for postpartum women (Price County) World Breastfeeding Week Breastfeeding in the Park-public event to promote and support breastfeeding at Pioneer Park Over 20 adults attended including currently pregnant and nursing moms, breastfeding advocates in the community and dads. Over 20 children were in attendance as well. Breastfeeding Ice Cream Social-Peter Christensen Health Center-Lac du Flambeau

12 Work Plan Progress Objective 3: Coalition s Position and Promotion of Breastfeeding Received the Gold Award from the WI BF Coalition for Coalition s work in Participation in 11/13 in Oneida County s Public Health Accreditation process, highlighting the Coalitions work over the past 8 years. The Coalition was used as an example to meet measures. Member presented on Grant Writing & Experience from a Local Perspective on the WI Nutrition &Physical Activity Coalition 4/22/14 Teleconference Call Member presented on NWBC activities at 6/14 WI Breastfeeding Summit of the WI Breastfeeding Coalition

13 Work Plan Progress Objective 3: Coalition s Position and Promotion of Breastfeeding Continue to hold bimonthly Coalition Meetings, meeting at SMH and 2x/year at HYMC, with members able to call in to participate Continue our Journal Club Election of new officers by Dec. 2, 2014 Continue to hold monthly Executive Committee Meetings Recruitment welcomed 4 new coalition members Press Releases-submitted press releases to local media Gold Award World Breastfeeding Week Father s Supporting Breastfeeding Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Center Annual Meeting and Education Offering

14 Continuing Education WALC Conference March 2014 (3 members attended) Wisconsin Breastfeeding Coalition Summit June 2014 (5 members attended) Coalition supported member continuing education Attendance at Office Nurse Breastfeeding Champion Training 14 hour continuing education session Attendance at Northwestern Wisconsin Breastfeeding Network Conference Topics included: Barriers to Breastfeeding, Breastfeeding Support, The Non-Latching Baby, Medications and the Breastfeeding Mother

15 Success Story After I had completed the first day of training (Office Nurse Breastfeeding Champion) I met with one of the young moms that I work with. Her baby was one week old. When I walked in to her home, she was in tears and said she was done breastfeeding. I asked her what was going on. She said that it was too painful and she couldn t take it any more. Her baby started to fuss so I asked her if she would just try it one more time and allow me to observe the feeding. She agreed. What I saw was that her baby was almost completely on his back rather than on his side facing her and his latch was only on her nipple. I was able to help her re-position him right away. She said she could not believe the difference that made! She continued to breastfeed her baby for another 6 weeks before stopping. Before I had attended the training, I did not understand the importance of positioning as much as I do now. (I wish she would have continued longer but she said it was just more than she could handle with her schedule.) I believe that everything that I learned in the training has enabled me to better prepare moms for what to expect concerning breastfeeding, help them make the choice to breastfeed, and also to support them very closely throughout the first few weeks when breastfeeding is most difficult for them. In addition to using the information I learn to help the families I work with, I also have been able to share information with my own daughter who breastfed her first baby for 15 months and is still breastfeeding her second child who is now 20 months old.

16 Moving Forward to 2015 Objective 1: Health Care Systems Supporting Breastfeeding & normalize breastfeeding Marshfield Clinic-evaluating drop in BF rates and creating plan to address within their procedures Coalition to assist the WI BF Coalition and the Chronic Disease Prevention Unit, WDPH, with their upcoming Maternity Care Practices grants they are working on. Activities will include: 2015-a physician/nurse practitioner breastfeeding education conference, 2016-effort to engage hospital administration in adopting MCP supporting breastfeeding.
