2 veryone wants to feel good, stay well and have longevity. While we can t control all things, we can take steps to reduce our risk for preventable illnesses by staying active, eating right, controlling our weight, knowing our numbers, getting regular check-ups, managing stress, and addressing health issues in a timely way. Holy Name has made an investment in you and our Medical Center by developing LiveWell, our employee wellness program. Among LiveWell s many benefits are a free Total Health Screening, the availability of healthy meals in our cafeteria, and weight loss and smoking cessation assistance. Recognizing the importance of exercise to a healthy lifestyle, we ve added an on-site Employee Fitness Center featuring workout equipment, free weights and group classes. Regular exercise yields numerous short- and long-term benefits. In addition to losing weight, increasing endurance, improving balance and flexibility, decreasing chance of injury, and enhancing psychological well-being, physical activity helps you to minimize disease development and manage chronic conditions. As role models for our community, staying healthy is a responsibility we have to ourselves and those we love. We hope you will take advantage of everything LiveWell has to offer. Judy Kutzleb, DNP, RN, CCRN, APN-C Vice President Advanced Practice Professionals April Rodgers Vice President Human Resources What does LiveWell offer? 5 WALKING FOR HEALTH 10,000 Steps to a Healthy You! Studies suggest that walking 10,000 steps per day can help you manage your weight and assist in preventing diabetes and heart disease. But how far is 10,000 steps? The average person s stride length is approximately 2.5 feet. That means it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk one mile; 10,000 steps for close to 5 miles. A sedentary person may average only 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day. A reasonable goal for most people is to increase average daily steps each week by 500 per day, until you can easily average 10,000 per day. Holy Name Walking Maps Holy Name has designated walking routes for employees, both inside the building and around the outside perimeter of our property. Look for the bfit bee signs that mark the route; then track your steps with a pedometer! Also consider using the Medical Center s staircases, if you re not carrying anything cumbersome and are wearing safe shoes. Walking up and down stairs works separate muscle groups and gives a cardio workout, so it s another great way to stay in shape. Healthy Meal Choices Healthy, new meal choices are now available in the Employee Cafeteria. Look for the EatWell bumble bees. EatWell meals are 550 or fewer calories, designed for healthy nutrition but not specifically for losing weight. EatWell meals adhere to the following nutritional standards: Fat, no more than grams; Saturated fat, less than 5 grams; Cholesterol, less than 100 mg; Sodium, 480 mg or less. The Holy Name employee cafeteria offers special pricing to encourage use of the salad bar. HEALTHY MEALS Outdoor Map Indoor Map PAGE 6 PAGE 7
6 SMOKING CESSATION Quit Smoking Now Help with smoking cessation is available from both our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and the Medical Center s Employee Health Services, which offers a structured and supervised Nicotine Replacement Program. Your smoking habits will determine the best treatment for you: nicotine patch, lozenge or other nicotine replacement, prescription medication even hypnosis and acupuncture are options. Referrals for on-site smoking cessation specialists are available. Our Employee Health Staff will give you the support you need. Call ext for an appointment. Stop Smoking and Enjoy the Benefits Right Away There s no better time to stop smoking than today. The good news is, no matter how long you ve been smoking, you can realize health benefits right away. Here s what happens to your body when you stop smoking: 20 minutes after you quit: Your heart rate and blood pressure begin to drop back down. 2 hours after you quit: Your hands and feet have better circulation and the temperature of your hands and feet return to normal. 8 hours after you quit: The nicotine level in your blood decreases rapidly; within eight hours, it will be a fraction of the level it was during smoking. 12 hours after you quit: Carbon monoxide levels in your blood drop to normal. Blood oxygen levels increase to normal. 24 hours after you quit: Your risk for a heart attack begins to drop. 48 hours after you quit: Damaged nerve endings start to regrow and your sense of smell and taste begin to return to normal. 72 hours after you quit: Your body is 100% NICOTINE FREE. Every minute counts toward improving your health. Stop today. Reach out for help and speak to someone about quitting. Contact Employee Health Services, ext. 7024, or the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at PAGE 8 Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Employees may use Holy Name s EAP for help in coping with difficult issues. EAP counselors provide assessment, support and referrals for a wide range of matters, including: Emotional distress/personal crisis Major life events Medical concerns Family/marital issues Financial and legal issues Concerns about aging parents Want to talk with someone?
