Lake Health Bariatric Surgery Center is on the move and as of March 25, 2014, we will be in our permanent office at Euclid Avenue, Suite 170, Willoughby, Ohio Our phone and fax numbers will remain the same. You can reach us by phone at and by fax at Those of you who have come to our temporary office know that we have outgrown that space and we thank you for your patience. Our new office is much more spacious and has a large waiting room and reception area, five exam rooms and a fully equipped education room where we will conduct pre-surgical education and post-operative follow-up visits. Beginning with the April 15 th post-operative group, we will be holding our preoperative and post-operative groups in our waiting room. One of the things we are most excited about is our new bariatric store! We will sell bariatric appropriate preand post-operative supplements and food as well as Bariatric Surgery Center gear. We believe this will be a real benefit for our patients as you prepare for the first few weeks after surgery and then look for healthy and tasty ways to increase protein intake farther out from surgery. To celebrate our new office and share in our excitement, we will be holding an open house on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, from 3-7 pm. Please plan to attend. See page 2 for more information on the open house.

2 Presenting at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery The most recent American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery meeting was held in Atlanta, Georgia in November Dr. Ben -Meir and Brooke presented their research on two topics. They found that 68% of patients with type II diabetics who had a laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy by Dr. Ben-Meir were off all diabetes medication at an average of 9.7 weeks after surgery. This is similar to both his own experience with patients with type II diabetes who had the gastric bypass and the national experience. They also presented a retrospective review of patients over the age of 60 that had laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy, or laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding over a six year time frame. Comparing their experience to that of patients between the ages of 21 and 59 and operated on within the same time period, no difference in surgical complication rate or hospital length of stay was found. This research indicates that performing bariatric surgery on patients over the age of 60 is safe. To help get the most out of your surgery remember to follow up with us at the recommended times. We would like to see you at: Party Time! Lake Health Bariatric Surgery Center Open House 2, 4, and 6 weeks after 3, 6, and 9 months after 1, 1 1/2, and 2 years after And every year after that! Please join us in celebrating our new office by attending our open house! The open house will be Wednesday, April 23rd 2014 from 3-7 pm. Our entire staff will be there to show you around. We will have food samples and give aways. Feel free to bring a friend, family member, or support person who has been with you throughout your weight loss journey. We look forward to seeing you there!

4 Support Groups We ve had great support groups so far this year. At our new food and recipe idea group we tried jicama with high protein ranch dip and mac and cheese made with low calorie Shirataki noodles. Those who came also shared a lot about foods they ve tried, recipes they like, and cookbooks they have found to be helpful. At the surprises after surgery group attendees discussed the reactions others have had to their weight loss as well as unexpected discoveries after surgery including enjoying healthy food and exercise. At our most recent group, we all had a great time looking at restaurant menus and discovering which items were healthy and which items were worse than we could have imagined. Attending education groups and support groups helps you stay informed and get much-needed support from those who understand your experiences, so please join us!
