publisher s page Nostalgia is good for you The main topic in this month s issue is about the immune system - the important biological structures and systems that protect our body from diseases. We all know how important it is to take care of our immune system, what can degrade it and what can be done to boost it. The articles inside will remind you how. But what you don t know is that nostalgia is also a powerful and effective immune booster. Recently, I found an old diary where I wrote about the UK holiday I took back in May 2000 with my wife Jan and children Jassie and Sean (then ages 11 and 8, respectively). As I read through the pages and relived the ordinary things we did (shopping, cooking, laundry, visiting relatives, feeding the ducks, more shopping) and the usual places we went to together as a young family (Sainsbury supermarket, Marks & Spencer, Waterstones Bookstore, Starbucks, etc.), I felt a warm glow inside my body (serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, cocktails?) as if someone had put a super soft cashmere blanket over me and made me feel warm and safe. It s hard to explain and might sound corny but I felt a powerful feeling of sweet sadness for a time gone by. By the same token, I felt glad knowing I had good times with my family because I ve always felt guilty of not giving them enough time and attention and had focused too much on running the business. We often greet our fondest memories with whimsy and longing to soothe the aches and pains of our adult life filled with demands and deadlines. Nostalgia is good for us in more ways than one, research shows. Happy memories strengthen our immune system by making people more optimistic and less anxious about the future. University of Southampton researchers found that looking back in time (or reminiscing ) can help maintain feelings of self-worth and contribute to a brighter outlook. The study also found that listening to nostalgic songs made people more optimistic than those who listened to a tune unattached to memories. Scientists believe that by promoting optimism, nostalgia could help individuals cope with daily stress. Nostalgia has been shown to counteract loneliness, boredom and anxiety. It makes people more generous to strangers and more tolerant of outsiders. Couples feel closer and look happier when they re sharing nostalgic memories. On cold days, or in cold rooms, people use nostalgia to literally feel warmer. The quickest way to induce nostalgia is through music so for you baby-boomers, load Eagles or Phil Collins in your Walkman and let s do Back to the Future! 4 Is your Gut Healthy? Every system in the body is connected. Your digestive and hormonal systems, for example, aren t independent of one another. At the center of it all is a properly functioning digestive system. When your gut is unhealthy, it can cause more than just stomach pain, gas, bloating, or diarrhea. Because 60% to 80% of our immune system is located in our gut, gut imbalances have been linked to hormonal imbalances, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, chronic fatigue, anxiety, fibromyalgia, depression, eczema, rosacea, and other chronic health problems. 10 signs you MAY have an unhealthy gut: 1. Digestive issues like bloating, gas, or diarrhea 2. Food allergies or sensitivities 3. Anxiety 4. Depression 5. Mood swings and irritability 6. Skin problems like eczema or rosacea 7. Diabetes 8. Autoimmune disease 9. Frequent infections 10. Poor memory and concentration such as ADD or ADHD 2 lifestylenewsdigest

The gut is the gateway to health, and the first step to take regardless of the diagnosis is to heal the gut. The 4R Program is a simple approach to repairing your gut and restoring your body s balance. 1. Remove Remove the bad. The goal is to get rid of things that negatively affect the environment of the gut, such as inflammatory foods, infections, and irritants like alcohol, caffeine, or drugs. Inflammatory foods, such as gluten, dairy, corn, soy, eggs, and sugar, can lead to food sensitivities. An elimination diet is recommended as the starting point to identify which foods are problematic. To do this, remove the foods for two weeks or more and then add them back in, one at a time, taking note of your body s response. Infections can be from parasites, yeast, or bacteria. A comprehensive stool analysis is key to determining the levels of good bacteria as well as any infections that may be present. Removing the infections may require treatment with herbs, antiparasite medication, antifungal medication, antifungal supplements, or even antibiotics. 2. Replace Replace the good. Add back in the essential ingredients for proper digestion and absorption that may have been depleted by diet, drugs, diseases, or aging. This includes digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid, and bile acids that are required for proper digestion. 3. Reinoculate Restoring beneficial bacteria to reestablish a healthy balance of good bacteria is critical. This may be accomplished by taking a probiotic supplement that contains beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacillus species. Also, taking a prebiotic supplement or consuming foods high in soluble fiber, such as Psyllium Husk, is important. 4. Repair Providing the nutrients necessary to help gut repair is essential. L-glutamine is an amino acid that helps to rejuvenate the gut wall lining. Other key nutrients include zinc, omega-3 fish oils, vitamin A, C, and E, as well as herbs such as slippery elm and aloe vera. No matter what your health issue is, the 4R program is sure to help you and your gut heal! By utilizing this simple approach, you may achieve a dramatic reversal of chronic and inflammatory illnesses in a very short period of time. Source: mindbodygreen.com May

Three Myths on Autoimmune Disease Although there are many different types of autoimmune diseases and they can affect many different organs, at their core, they are all similar in that they are an immune response caused by systemic inflammation that leads your body to attack itself. Your immune system has a very sophisticated process for keeping you safe that leads it to identify all of the foreign substances that enter your body or what you come into contact with. If your immune system deems anything dangerous, it will produce antibodies to ward off the harmful intruders. Autoimmune diseases are born when your body is working hard to defend itself against something potentially dangerous, such as an allergen, a toxin, an infection, or even a food, and it fails to differentiate between the intruder and parts of your own body. Mistaking certain types of tissues for harmful substances, your body turns these antibodies against itself, wreaking havoc on your organs. Being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease such as asthma, systemic lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, eczema and psoriasis can be overwhelming. While you may have many questions about treatment and how to manage your condition, a few myths can complicate the full picture. Let s dispel a few myths about managing your autoimmune disorder. Myth 1: Your Diet Has Nothing to do With Your Illness Conventional medicine will tell you that you have an autoimmune disease simply because your immune system is over reactive. What is often left out of the picture is that your diet can be making your symptoms worse. Chronic gut inflammation, food sensitivities, lowgrade gut infection and toxic chemicals in our diet are thought to be related to our increased incidence of autoimmunity. Addressing gut dysfunction and food sensitivities are critical aspects of healing and thriving with autoimmune diseases. Myth 2: You Are Destined for a Life of Disease and Disability Statistics show that autoimmune disorders are one of the top causes of disease and disability today. However, that does not have to be the case. By finding a functional medicine practitioner and a trusted medical team, you can approach your autoimmune disease to treat your entire body, mind and spirit. A multifaceted approach that includes diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes can not only give symptomatic relief but also change your outlook on your diagnoses and health. Myth 3: Prescription Medications Are Your Only Hope Oftentimes, patients believe that prescription medications are their only hope in relieving symptoms associated with their diagnoses. While prescription medications can be necessary in cases of severe autoimmunity, supplements like probiotics, vitamin D, turmeric and omega-3 fatty acids can decrease the inflammation and aid your immune system. Taking nutrients to heal the gut lining and finding supplements to support current therapies can help ease autoimmune inflammation. Mind-body interventions such as yoga, meditation, and acupuncture may also help. Finding a health practitioner to help you approach your autoimmune disorder with a variety of methods such as your diet, your stress level, sleep habits, and reducing your toxic exposures can be key to unlocking restored health and wellness. 7 Wine could boost YOUR Immune System Scientists from the University of Texas at Austin have uncovered evidence that the red-wine polyphenol, resveratrol, benefits the immune system. This study suggests red wine s potential to enhance human immunity, particularly in relation to high-fat diets. RESVERATROL MAY OFFSET A HIGH-FAT DIET A high-fat diet affects the thymus the organ that prepares T-cells, which regulate the immune system preventing the thymus from releasing as many T-cells as it otherwise might. The thymus is most active during childhood, and its early activity determines its lifelong functionality. Basically, you set your ability to fight infectious disease in your immune system at an early age, said Christopher Jolly, associate professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences. Jolly and his colleagues observed two groups of mice, feeding one group a high-fat diet, the other a low-fat diet. Within each group, the mice were subdivided into those receiving high and low doses of resveratrol. The high-fat subjects gained weight, but those given resveratrol showed increases in T-cells and lower thymic fat accumulation, in volumes that corresponded with the polyphenol dose they received. In other words, even if your diet sucks, is there something you could consume to offset those negative immune system effects of a high-fat diet? Jolly asked. Our study says, Yes. It s resveratrol. As is typical of resveratrol research, the doses administered were much higher than conceivably could be consumed through drinking wine. Nevertheless, Jolly believes that at low doses of the polyphenol what one might ingest from a generous daily serving of red wine, berries and peanuts you may start to see some beneficial effects. Moderate Alcohol Consumption May Fight Off Infections Resveratrol may not be the only component of wine that boosts the immune system: New research from Oregon Health and Science University claims that pure ethanol the alcohol in beverages can improve one s ability to fight off infections when consumed regularly in moderation. The authors of the study, published in the journal Vaccine, inoculated a group of monkeys with a smallpox vaccine, assessing subjects responses by measuring their antibody counts. Then they let the monkeys drink. Each monkey had access to a 4 percent ethanol solution and could imbibe as he pleased. As with humans, some chose to drink heavily. A control group had access only to sugar water. Seven months later, the researchers reinoculated the monkeys with the same vaccine. The immune system has a type of memory, where if it sees what it s been immunized against, it will mount an antibody response, said Kathy Grant, a behavioral neuroscience professor at Oregon Health & Science University. The results were clear: The moderate drinkers produced the most antibodies against the virus, in significantly greater volumes than those same monkeys had following their first exposure. The control group showed healthy responses, too; their antibody counts increased, though not as much as the moderate drinkers. The heavy drinkers immune systems responded with fewer antibodies. Most previous studies have shown that alcohol suppresses the immune system, Grant told Wine Spectator. We really didn t expect that the moderate drinkers would have a much more robust response compared to the nondrinkers. Source: winespectator.com May

How to have SUPER Immunity The ability of an organism to resist a specific infection or toxin by the action of antibodies or sensitized white blood cells is what creates our immunity. Our immune systems take a beating trying to fight against natural and industrial waste, as well as poor-quality food and water that causes illness. T-cells, made by the immune system, are the foremost soldiers of our immune system, and our gut flora is like the headquarters sending out troops to keep the home front protected. Fortunately, there are simple but surefire ways to have super immunity: 1 Eat healthily You can practically double your immune system s ability to fight disease with the way you eat. Try eating more leafy greens, and organic fruits, which are chock-full of important immune-boosting antioxidants. You can maintain long-term health just by changing your nutrition. Without carotenoids and leafy greens that help boost gut flora, your immune system becomes exhausted. The quality of a diet can be judged based on three simple criteria: Levels of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals) per calorie, Amounts of macronutrients (fat, carbohydrate, protein) to meet individual needs, without excessive calories that may lead to weight gain or health compromise, Avoidance of potentially toxic substances (such as trans fats) and limited amounts of other potentially harmful substances (such as sodium). 2 Eat foods high on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) These are foods that fight free radicals in the body. Free radicals are an uncharged molecule that can wreak havoc on the body, one of the main reasons disease develops and the body turns acid instead of maintaining its alkaline balance. They congest our cells and cause us to age faster and be more prone to disease. 3 Stop eating fast-food Slow-absorbing food is better for your immune system. When you eat fast food devoid of nutrients, it makes your digestive system work extra hard to digest something that gives your body no benefit. Many slow-absorbing foods have both fiber and protein, or one or the other, along with important nutrients which also keep your glucose levels from spiking. 4 Support healthy gut flora Eating refined sugar erodes gut flora, while eating fermented foods like Kefir or drinking Kombucha can help create healthy gut flora. Dark chocolate has also been shown to provide food for healthy gut bacteria. Leafy greens help to create healthy gut flora, too. Obviously, taking a probiotic supplement can help as well, since this replaces bad bacteria with good bacteria, making it harder for the bad guys to hang around in your intestinal tract. 5 Get More Sleep Your body can t fight free radicals and restore itself if it barely has enough energy to carry out functions like pumping your heart or making sure you breathe. Dr. Fikrig and his colleagues at the Yale School of Medicine has found that our circadian rhythms (sleep and wake cycles) actually govern our immunity. Disturbed sleep patterns means compromised immunity. Make sure when you sleep, you stay asleep soundly for 7-9 hours nightly. Sleeping even removes toxic waste form the brain! Eat breakfast 6 lifestylenewsdigest

6 Start the day with breakfast. Studies show that missing breakfast can be linked to susceptibility to illnesses. People who eat breakfast in the morning are less likely to catch colds and other respiratory illnesses than those who skip breakfast, according to studies done at Cardiff University in Wales. One study of 100 students who kept nutrition and health diaries showed that subjects who caught more than one infection during the 10-week study were less likely to have eaten breakfast. For a healthy start, include 100% whole grains, fruit, and a lean protein like beans and legumes, in your breakfast. Take a Daily Walk Exercise is one of the most important ways to promote a good immune response in the body. You don t need to overdo it. Intense workouts can actually cause more stress on the body and depress the immune system. Especially if you are already under the weather, keep it light. 7 8 With your healthcare providers approval, use herbs and supplements to support immunity There are literally hundreds of herbs that help boost the immune system and fight off disease. These include things like moringa, olive leaf, astragalus, cloves, oregano, and more. Conversely, improper use of antibiotics can dampen your natural immune response, and kill healthy gut flora that are your second brain when it comes to fighting diseases. Taking probiotic supplements after an antibiotic therapy may help restore them back to normal. Sources: naturalsociety.com, clevelandclinicwellness.com May

Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria in Our Food supply By Barry Estabrook Macario has reason to be vigilant. Her 18-month-old son, Simon, died in 2004 from an infection known as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (or MRSA, pronounced mersa ). On his first birthday, Macario marveled to her husband that the baby had never been sick. Then one morning, the boy awoke with a bloodcurdling shriek. Rushed to the hospital, Simon was put on a heart-lung machine. The doctors administered every available antibiotic, she said. It didn t work. The bacteria were resistant to all of the medication. In less than 24 hours, he was dead. While it remains unclear how MRSA infected Simon, the germs that killed him were community-acquired MRSA- CA, meaning that he came in contact with them through everyday living. It is clear that these antibiotic resistant bacteria are on the rise. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the incidence of MRSA in the United States more than doubled between 1999 and 2005, from 127,000 to 280,000, and MRSArelated deaths rose from 11,200 to 17,200. Perhaps it s no coincidence that while the quantity of antibiotics given to humans has remained stable, the amount fed to livestock has soared. According to Food and Drug Administration records, antibiotic use on farms grew from about 18 million pounds in 1999 to nearly 30 million pounds in As the use of antibiotics in farming and raising livestock has increased, new antibiotic resistant bacteria, or superbugs, are emerging. Dr. in public health, Everly Macario from Harvard University, has spent decades as a consultant, working to prevent deaths from chronic conditions such as cancer and cardiac disease. She believes that what she buys or more accurately, refuses to buy in the supermarket is the most important action she takes, not only for her family s health but for the health of every person in her country. I look for Certified Organic labels, and no less. It s not the antibiotics themselves that are troubling, it s the increasing wave of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that might be traveling on food. Today, 80 percent of the antibiotics used in the United States are fed to livestock to make the animals grow faster and survive inhumane living conditions. The low doses kill many bacteria, but some develop mutations that make them immune to the same drugs that once destroyed them. The more antibiotics you use, the more resistance you get. That Which Does Not Kill Us Bacteria are reproductive dynamos; one resistant bacterium is able to erupt into a colony of more than 1 million in less than a day. In the presence of a nonlethal dose of antibiotics, bacteria can mutate to become resistant, breeding a new strain. Which is exactly what began to happen on farms across the U.S. Unfortunately, within two decades there was persuasive scientific evidence that the low-dose antibiotics were a recipe for disaster, animals began to carry antibiotic resistant bacteria. 8 lifestylenewsdigest

A Plague of New Superbugs And it s not only MRSA. During studies that lasted from 2005 to 2012, food consumer reports found a majority of antibiotic raised poultry, pork and meat to test positive for antibiotic resistant bacteria such as e-coli, salmonella, listeria, and other bacteria known to cause illness and even death. Companies that sell the drugs used on livestock deny that there is a connection between resistant bacteria found in animals and humans, however, it is virtually impossible to find a microbiologist unaffiliated with the drug industry who agrees. Lance Price, a professor at George Washington University s School of Public Health and Health Services said There s very clear, sound science showing that the multi-drug-resistant strains emerged from drug use in food animal production then spread to humans. Anyone saying that there s no data is either deceiving themselves or lying. A Demand for Drug-Free Many health retail companies now refuse to sell meat produced with antibiotics and the list is growing. Antibiotic-free-meat sales are climbing at a rate of 10 to 15 percent annually, as consumers grow more and more aware. Everly Macario is convinced that conscientious shoppers are the key to boosting those numbers. If we buy only antibiotic-free meat, then demand for conventional meat will drop and more farmers will stop drugging their animals. It s something every shopper can do. Source: eatingwell.com May

the Rise of Superbugs What exactly are superbugs? Superbugs are bacteria resistant to one or more antibiotics, and they make it difficult to treat or cure infections that once were easily treated. The antibiotic has lost its ability to control or kill bacterial growth. The bacteria can grow even in a sea of antibiotics because the antibiotic doesn t touch them. Superbugs can be a big problem for healthcare providers as fewer antibiotics can kill the bacteria and stop them from multiplying. The spread of superbugs bacteria that have changed in ways that render antibiotics ineffective against them is a serious and growing threat around the world, according to the World Health Organization s first global report on antibiotic resistance. Once common treatments for everyday intestinal and urinary tract infections, pneumonia, infections in newborns, and diseases like gonorrhea, are no longer working in many people. The new report on the global threat adds to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report showing that two million people in the United States are infected annually with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and 23,000 of them die each year as a result. To understand the dangers posed by superbugs, National Geographic spoke with Stuart Levy, chair of the board of the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. How are the bacteria able to circumvent the power of antibiotics? At a molecular level, these tiny organisms are finding ways to outsmart the drugs designed to kill them. In the case of superbugs they don t just survive - they thrive. The bacteria have acquired the ability to destroy the antibiotic in order to protect themselves. They ve developed a gene for resistance to, say, penicillin, and that gene protects them. A genetic mutation might enable a bacteria to produce enzymes that inactivate antibiotics. A bacteria may have developed resistance to five or six antibiotics, so in treatment, you don t know which one to choose, and the bacteria accumulate resistance by developing new genes. Genetics is working against us, almost like a science-fiction story. Why are these superbugs spreading and the threat growing? We re continuing to use antibiotics in a bad way. They re supposed to be used to combat bacteria, not viruses. The common cold is a virus. Any time you use an antibiotic when it s not needed, you re pushing antibiotic resistance ahead. People are misusing them in their homes. They may have a stockpile they ve saved, and think taking an antibiotic will help them with a cold. They re not helping their cold, and they re propagating resistance. What about other uses, such as using antibiotics in animal feed by the meat industry? This is a big issue. About 80 percent of antibiotics manufactured are given to beef cattle, chickens, and hogs to help them grow better and put on more weight. They excrete them, and the antibiotics largely are not broken down. They enter the environment the ground and the water and retain their ability to affect bacteria and promote antibiotic resistance. 10 lifestylenewsdigest

How can we combat the further growth and spread of superbugs? By using antibiotics only when we need them, and by eliminating their use in animals. There s a paucity of new antibiotics to take care of these multi-resistant superbugs, so we re at the mercy of the bacteria. Are there new antibiotics in development? Antibiotics are important medicines that have been used to treat bacterial infections for 70 years. They work by either disrupting processes bacteria need to survive or preventing them from reproducing. But these drugs are becoming less and less effective against bacterial infections and could one day run out. Right now there aren t any alternatives that could take their place. The best way to fight back? Instead of relying on external responses (antibiotics) to protect us from bacterial and viral infections, we would greatly benefit from keeping our immune system as strong as possible. The immune system, very much like bacteria and viruses, can evolve and adapt. The stagnant and unadaptable response of an antibiotic against a superbug is counter-productive, and it would be ideal to give our bodies a strong immune system to prevent and cure diseases, instead of solely relying on outdated antibiotics. The World Health Organization recommends that people should use antibiotics only when prescribed by a doctor, that they should complete the full prescription, and never share antibiotics with others or use leftover prescriptions. Sources: bbc.co.uk, nationalgeographic.com, cbsnews.com It s conceivable that in 20 years, treatments such as chemotherapy and simple surgery will become impossible because these rely on antibiotics. We are facing a future where a cough or cut could kill once again. May

Blood test for Down s syndrome By James Gallagher Testing pregnant women s blood for disorders in unborn children promises dramatic advances in medicine, researchers have said. A US team writing in the New England Journal of Medicine say Down s syndrome can be reliably tested for in the mother s blood. Meanwhile, Great Ormond Street Hospital has started offering similar tests. A decision on whether the UK s Down s syndrome screening program should change is due this year. At the moment in the UK, a woman is assessed based on her age and an ultrasound scan, with those deemed highrisk having further tests. These involve a needle taking a sample of the placenta or the fluid that bathes the baby. There is a risk of miscarriage with the procedure. Blood tests look for fragments of DNA from the placenta, which drift about in the mother s bloodstream. Down s syndrome is caused by an extra copy of a huge stretch of DNA and that extra bundle of genetic information can be detected in the blood. If initial tests are more accurate, they could reduce the number of women who go on to have the invasive test. Previous research had suggested the tests were effective in high-risk women. Now, a team at the University of California, San Francisco, suggests the blood test could replace current tests for all women. They correctly identified 38 cases of Down s syndrome out of nearly 16,000 women tested. The basic risk screening found only 30 cases and had a higher rate of falsepositives. The UK s national screening committee will assess the new tests. Professor Lyn Chitty, from Great Ormond Street, has been evaluating how they could be introduced across the NHS (National Health Service). She says testing every pregnant woman s blood is unlikely. However, she says it can and should be integrated into the existing screening so that high-risk women have an extra check before deciding if an invasive procedure is needed. She told the BBC: These are really exciting times; this cell-free DNA is changing prenatal care dramatically. I think it broadens access to testing, really. A number of women will decline invasive testing because of the risk of miscarriage and they may well take up non-invasive prenatal testing. She said progress in the area was very rapid and tests for other genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis were also becoming available. Great Ormond Street already has an approved test which it has started offering in parts of London. The Down s Syndrome Association said that if the changes did come into force then the risks and benefits need to be clearly communicated to parents. At the time of testing, easily understood and up-to-date information must be provided in an unbiased way by well trained professionals. the organization said in a statement.
