DIET, BODY IMAGE AND THE MEDIA Just be you.

WHAT IS DIETING? I think dieting is: If someone told you to start dieting what types of things would you do?

NOTES A DIET IS NOT A SHORT TERM GOAL TO LOSE WEIGHT. DIET IS A LIFESTYLE CHOICE. Definition: A diet is the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.

Please do your worksheet while we watch the video. SUPERSIZE VS SUPERSKINNY

NOTES BMI WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? Body Mass Index is used as a tool for estimation! It helps us look at your risk factors for developing heart disease and other obesity related diseases. Good or normal = Bad or overweight = Really bad or underweight = under and obese = 30 +

NOTES BODY IMAGE Body image is how you view your physical self - including whether you feel you are attractive and whether others like your looks.

NOTES IMPROVE BODY IMAGE Your body is your own. Focus on how healthy you are and the things you can do and are capable of. Identify what you can realistically change Never ever focus on things you can t Make goals to help you reach the ideal you! Every single day look in the mirror and give one compliment to yourself. Appreciate that you are so much more than what you look like.

NOTES SELF ESTEEM Self Esteem is all about how much you feel you are worth - and how much you feel other people value you. Media influences: we might compare ourselves to airbrushed models or celebrities. We might feel like they matter more than we do. Know that this is not true. We are all imperfect and it makes us unique. Family members: your parents or siblings might have had esteem issues in the past and are projecting it onto you or they might just be trying to push you to be better in the wrong way. Friends: friends comments might come from ignorance. Don t worry about what someone else wants.

NOTES HEALTHY SELF ESTEEM A positive, optimistic attitude can help people develop strong self-esteem. Knowing what makes you happy and how to meet your goals can help you feel capable, strong, and in control of your life. A positive attitude and a healthy lifestyle (such as exercising and eating right) are a great combination for building good self-esteem.

I know you are ALL capable of learning. I know that I believe what you want matters. I know that you can influence others around you in a positive way. I know that you are all unique individuals with different goals.

STICKY NOTE HAPPINESS Go stand next to someone who you don t know very much about. Introduce yourself and tell the other person how your day is going (good or bad) (all of the 1 s) Your partner will respond saying Hi (your name) I m (their name). Then they will ask why your day is good/bad. Respond appropriately. Now after telling your partner about your day, ask them about theirs. 2 s will now tell you about their day and how it is going.

Now that you know something about this person, write something nice, encouraging, helpful, inspiring etc that specifically applies to THEIR day on a sticky note and stick it to their back. Go sit down. DO NOT LOOK AT THE STICKY NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT DO I DO? Sometimes we all need a little help. If you feel like body image and self esteem issues are too much for you to handle alone, then don t! Talk to someone who supports you and doesn't bring you down. They can help you put your body image in perspective and give you positive feedback about your body, your skills, and your abilities Sketches

WHICH BODY DO YOU THINK IS IDEAL?

NOW WHERE WOULD YOU RATE YOURSELF?

THINK ABOUT THIS. For the body you rated as ideal, why did you do so? What things make you think that that body type is better than all of the others. Why did you rate yourself where you did? What physical things do you like about yourself. Which ones do you want to change? Why do you want to change?

IMAGE GAP - ASSIGNMENT Please have your Image Gap worksheet in front of you.

NOTES Extreme Body Image Issues EATING DISORDERS OVER AND UNDER any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits Eating disorders are real, treatable medical illnesses. They frequently coexist with other illnesses such as depression, substance abuse, or anxiety disorders. Other symptoms can become life-threatening if a person does not receive treatment

ANOREXIA NERVOSA see themselves as overweight, even when they are clearly underweight. Eating, food, and weight control become obsessions. typically weigh themselves repeatedly, portion food carefully, and eat very small quantities of only certain foods. also may engage in binge eating followed by extreme dieting, excessive exercise, self-induced vomiting, or misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas

Extremely low body weight Severe food restriction Relentless pursuit of thinness and unwillingness to maintain a normal or healthy weight Intense fear of gaining weight Distorted body image and self-esteem that is heavily influenced by perceptions of body weight and shape, or a denial of the seriousness of low body weight Lack of menstruation among girls and women SYMPTOMS Thinning of the bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis) Brittle hair and nails Dry and yellowish skin Growth of fine hair all over the body (lanugo) Mild anemia, muscle wasting, and weakness Severe constipation Low blood pressure, or slowed breathing and pulse Damage to the structure and function of the heart Brain damage Multi-organ failure Drop in internal body temperature, causing a person to feel cold all the time Lethargy, sluggishness, or feeling tired all the time Infertility

BULIMIA NERVOSA frequent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food and feel a lack of control over these episodes. This binge eating is followed by forced vomiting, excessive use of laxatives or diuretics, fasting, excessive exercise, or a combination they often fear gaining weight, want desperately to lose weight, and are intensely unhappy with their body size and shape. usually maintain what is considered a healthy or normal weight, while some are slightly overweight.

Chronically inflamed and sore throat SYMPTOMS Swollen salivary glands in the neck and jaw area Worn tooth enamel, and increasingly sensitive and decaying teeth as a result of exposure to stomach acid Acid reflux disorder and other gastrointestinal problems Intestinal distress and irritation from laxative abuse Severe dehydration from purging of fluids Electrolyte imbalance too low or too high levels of sodium, calcium, potassium, and other minerals that can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

BINGE-EATING lose control over their eating often are overweight or obese. obese people are at higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. experience guilt, shame, and distress about their binge eating, which can lead to more binge eating.

SPORTS AND EATING DISORDERS Athletes and dancers are particularly vulnerable to developing eating disorders around the time of puberty, as they may want to stop or suppress growth (both height and weight). Center Stage Coaches, family members, and others may encourage teens in certain sports such as gymnastics, ice skating, and ballet to be as thin as possible. Some athletes and runners are also encouraged to weigh less or shed body fat at a time when they are biologically destined to gain it. - Athletes

TREATMENT Treatment plans may include one or more of the following: Individual, group, or family psychotherapy Medical care and monitoring Nutritional counseling Medications (for example, antidepressants). Some patients also may need to be hospitalized to treat problems caused by malnutrition or to ensure they eat enough if they are very underweight. Complete recovery is possible

BEAUTIFUL Beautiful takes a serious look at the emotions that arise when women of color wear their hair natural or straight in our present society. Three women courageously open up and discuss honestly what they believe is society's perception of beauty and how hair and other body issues are portrayed in the media and society today, and what impact it has on their lives. This documentary was created to serve as a doorway for starting the discussion around mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and self esteem, which can be very sensitive topics for some adolescents and women as it pertains to body image and hair. This work also serves as a tool for Social Workers and mental health professionals to help identify the connections between body image and mental health more clearly. This work also shows how having a strong family network and support system can combat negative feelings and societal pressures to conform to mainstream standards of beauty.
