1 PointsPlus Values: Breaking the Code Take our quiz and boost your knowledge page 4 July 13-19, 2014
2 From WeightWatchers.com Meet Brandi Weight Watchers Leader Read More Success Stories about Leaders on WeightWatchers.com Working the numbers Small meals throughout the day seem to work best for me. I divide my weekly PointsPlus Allowance of 49 over the week so a typical day gives me a total of 33 PointsPlus values. I break it down into 4 or 5 meals of 6 to 8 PointsPlus values per meal. This approach helps me stay satisfied and energized all day, keeps me focused on Weight Watchers Power Foods and gives me a game plan for using my PointsPlus values. Illustration by Sheree Boyd Sticking with it Advice from Elly Trickett Director, Program Strategy Post-run pick I brag that I m like Rain Man when it comes to PointsPlus values. Test me! I know every food! I also know what fills me up. After a long run, my body yells for fruit and salt. Peanut butter on toast with a load of fruit and a dollop of yogurt is perfect and I ve earned the 6 PointsPlus values it costs! Recipe 2014 Weight Watchers International, Inc. All rights reserved. Photo by Tina Rupp. Frozen Chocolate-Peanut Butter Banana-Cookie Bites Peanut butter-infused chocolate pudding and sliced bananas are layered between vanilla wafers, then frozen. (You don t have to spend much for luscious flavor!).per serving prep: 10 min freeze: 2 hours serves 15 Tell all Shop Your best cart options Eat Out Your best menu choices Get PointsPlus values for thousands of grocery store foods and menu items from 150+ restaurants, plus Plan-wise choices from different cuisines. Our Shop and Eat Out guides* will help you make right-for-you decisions about what to buy and order any time, any place. *Available in participating meeting locations. 2 Tbsp creamy peanut butter ½ cup chocolate pudding, prepared with fat-free milk 30 reduced-fat vanilla wafers 1 ripe banana, cut into 15 (¼-inch-thick) slices Did you know? If you re an etools subscriber, you can tweak servings or ingredients for WeightWatchers.com recipes in the Recipe Builder! Just click Edit at the top of the recipe window. Stir peanut butter into pudding until combined. Spoon 1 teaspoon pudding mixture on flat side of each of 15 cookies. Top each with 1 slice banana and 1 more teaspoon pudding mixture; top with remaining cookies, flat side down. Put into an airtight container and freeze until firm, about 2 hours. Serve or store up to 2 weeks. Yields 1 per serving. NOTES Look for store-bought pudding prepared with fat-free milk. We preferred the texture of the store-bought to homemade when frozen. The tops of the cookies can be drizzled with a little melted chocolate before freezing if desired (could affect PointsPlus values). 2 WEIGHT WATCHERS WEEKLY WEIGHT WATCHERS WEEKLY 3
3 By the Numbers See how much you know about PointsPlus values 1 What nutrients are calculated to make up PointsPlus values? A fat, fiber, sugar, protein B fiber, fat, sodium, carbohydrates C protein, carbs, fat, fiber D calories, fat, sugar, protein Answer: C. These are the primary nutrients that make up a food and that make up calories. PointsPlus values give a more complete picture of a food s impact on the body than calories do. For more info, go to Understanding PointsPlus Values on WeightWatchers.com* or scan this QR code: 2 True or false: Half a cup of canned white beans is 3 PointsPlus value in the Tracker; 1 cup is 6. False. A cup is 7. Here s why: The Tracker rounds up or down to the nearest whole number so, in some cases, doubling the amount results in a PointsPlus value that s lower or higher than simply multiplying by 2. In a pinch, of course, it s fine to double the values for double the serving size. 3 All fruit and most vegetables are 0 PointsPlus value per serving because: A They contain no protein. B They re so good for you that we want you to eat them. C Their nutritional makeup is too complicated to figure out. D They re so low in calories they don t really count. Answer: B. All fruits and vegetables have calories but they re also rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and so on. The more you eat of this good stuff, the less you re likely to have of the not-so-good. There s a kind of prepaid allowance for them in your daily PointsPlus Target so feel free to eat them to satisfaction. 4 Which has a higher PointsPlus value per 1 oz serving: popcorn or pretzels? They re the same: 3. But you get 3 cups of popcorn, vs. about 24 small or 11 regular-size pretzel twists. 5 True or false: You can find the PointsPlus value of beer with the PointsPlus calculator. True-ish. Alcohol doesn t show up on nutrition labels (and most wine and liquor bottles don t even have nutrition labels), so for an accurate number, use your Pocket Guide, Tracker, or the Shop or Eat Out** guides. But to get a good estimate, you can enter 14 grams the amount of alcohol in a typical bottle of beer, glass of wine, or cocktail as fat in the Calculator. For more info, see page 4 of Frequently Asked Questions. 4 WEIGHT WATCHERS WEEKLY *For etools subscribers. **Available in participating meeting locations. WEIGHT WATCHERS WEEKLY 5
4 ADVERTISEMENT Before starting any activity routine, take the readiness quiz on page 6 of Frequently Asked Questions. fitness The on activity PointsPlus values What are activity PointsPlus values? Think of them as feedback on your physical activity, based on your weight, time spent moving, and how hard you work. You can also use them as PointsPlus value currency to swap for food. What if I don t like to exercise? If you re not into lifting weights or running laps, no problem. Activity PointsPlus values are earned for activity, not for sweating till you drop! So move in a way you enjoy from dancing to dodgeball to going for a stroll. How do I track activity PointsPlus values? The easiest way is with ActiveLink*, our wearable monitor, which records every move you make and tracks your activity PointsPlus values (it syncs with the Activity Tracker at WeightWatchers.com). Or you can input them yourself, using the handy calculator function, into the Tracker or our mobile app.* (If you track on paper, refer to the activity PointsPlus value charts in your Pocket Guide.) How do I swap them for food PointsPlus values? Simply trade them one-to-one. You can choose to do this each day (use them the day they re earned, or lose them), or let them pile up over a week. (You can t roll them over from week to week, though). If you re an etools subscriber, you can manage these settings in the Activity Tracker just click Settings. A NEW PLATE. A CLEAN SLATE WITH WEIGHT WATCHERS SMART ONES We get it even when you re working hard to stay on track, setbacks happen. Sometimes it s good to wipe the slate clean and move on. Smart Ones can help, with delicious options like our Teriyaki Chicken & Vegetables for a PointsPlus value of 6. Join the Clean Slate conversation at eatyourbest.com. For more info, see page 5 of Frequently Asked Questions. *For etools subscribers.
