2 What's new since last High Level Group meeting By 31/7/2017 all Member States notified their strategy/ies to implement the EU school scheme for 2017/ at national level 2 at regional level (BE: 3 strategies; DE: 15 strategies) Total 44 strategies 13 strategies posted in Europa school scheme webpage, with EN translation for transparency the rest, on which clarifications pending, will follow Strategies not approved by the Commission Member States responsible for design (choices) & management (implementation) of EU school scheme 2
3 Some highlights from the strategies Broader coverage all MS participate Children in primary schools targeted in all participating MS Contribution to healthier eating habits: fruit and vegetables for children in 26 MS (in 12 MS only fresh) milk for children in all MS - & cheese, yogurt & milk products without added sugar in 21 - & Annex V milk products, with possible added sugar, in 12 New: children may taste honey in 9 MS and olives/olive oil in 6 MS Educational dimension enhanced for milk Authorities/stakeholders involved in planning and implementation 3

6 What about fruit and vegetables? Schoolchildren will receive fruit and vegetables in 26 countries all but SE, UK in 12 countries, part of BE (Flanders) and DE (12 of the 15 Lander) only fresh Processed: juice, compote, dried fruit, soup no added sugar, very few cases of added salt (gazpacho, kraut) and added fat (gazpacho), approved by health/nutrition authorities 6
7 What about milk and dairy products? Schoolchildren will receive milk and dairy products in all EU countries Three-tier system 1) drinking milk (priority) 2) dairy products with no added sugar; 3) dairy products with possible added sugar (stricter conditions) with always approval health/nutrition authorities In 6 countries (CY, EL, LV, MT, NL, SE), part of BE (Flanders) and of DE (7 of 15 Lander: Bremen, Mecklenburg, Niedersachsen, Rheinland Pfalz, Sachsen Anhalt, Schleswig Hostein, Thüringen) only drinking milk 7
8 What about milk and dairy products? In addition to milk, cheese, plain yoghurt & other dairy products with no added sugar in 9 countries (BG, EE, ES, FR, HR, IE, PL, RO, SI), part of BE (Wallonia and BXL) and 3 DE Lander (Bayern, Baden- Wurtenberg, Sachsen) 8
9 What about milk and dairy products? Yogurts and milk-based drinks with sugar/flavouring (EU aid only to milk component): In 11 countries (AT, CZ, DK, FI, IT, HU, LT, LU, PT, SK UK) and 4 of the 15 Lander (Berlin, Brandenburg, Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen) Max 7% of added sugar (as in previous milk scheme) with lower amounts in AT (to be reduced to 5,5 and 3,5%), DK, LT and SK (to be reduced to 5%) 9
10 Healthy/ier choices Fresh fruit and vegetables in 12 of 26 countries; priority over processed fruit and vegetables in line with previous scheme = quantity or frequency Priority for milk over other dairy products frequency, more attractive price system; less countries supply products with added sugar and some reduce max % of added sugar Strategies provide (non-mandatory) information on envisaged implementation: monitoring reports due by 31/1/2019 to indicate actual implementation = quantities by groups of products 10
11 Educational measures Activities grouped around the following categories: school gardens visits to farms, dairies, farmers' markets, museums tasting/cooking classes, workshops seminars, lessons other: e.g. competitions, games 9% of planned 6-year-budget for the school scheme if confirmed, enhanced as non-mandatory in previous school milk scheme No EU funding required in several strategies national or private funding 11
12 New: wider range of agricultural products Under educational measures, schoolchildren may taste other agricultural products: Honey in 9 countries AT, BG, CZ, EL, FR, IT, LT, RO, SI Olives/olive oil in 6 countries EL, ES, FR, IT, LT, SI Other pumpkin seed oil in SI 12
