2 Nurses from our disease management department are available to present any of the following topics to employees. All educational sessions are approximately 30 minutes but can be configured to meet your timeframe. Generally, these sessions are designed to be delivered in person, but can be done via webinar format. To schedule, contact your sales representative or Jane Shirley as early as possible prior to your desired presentation date. Additional topics can be developed if adequate preparation time is allowed. General Health A Good Night s Sleep Sleep is one of the most important and often ignored health behaviors. This session will focus on the importance of sleep and its influence on health, and will provide some tips for getting a good night s sleep. Biometrics Having information is the first step to taking action and making changes. This session addresses the importance of knowing cholesterol and blood glucose levels, blood pressure, waist circumference, body composition and the risk factors of developing chronic health conditions when biometrics are outside of recommended ranges. Budgeting Your Wellness We all know how to manage a budget. This session uses the same concept knowing a starting balance and making daily plans to stay within a target range to achieve healthy eating, physical activity and other wellness goals. Depression and Anxiety Are you sad or bored or depressed? Are you worried or anxious or irritable? This session will look at some symptoms, situations and possible strategies for sorting out mood issues and where and when to get help. Diabetes and Pre-diabetes In 2014, about 10.3% of Kansans had diabetes and 6.5% had diagnosed prediabetes. Another large group of Kansans likely have prediabetes and don t know it. This session will provide general knowledge about diabetes and pre-diabetes, risk factors, and how to decrease the risk of developing diabetes. Don t Let Your Behaviors Topple Your Health In this fun, interactive session, we will play Jenga to demonstrate how our behaviors either support our health or put our health at risk.
3 Health & Wellness Education General Health Flu Prevention Influenza is a contagious, respiratory illness that can range from mild to very severe and even fatal. A well-recognized prevention strategy is to encourage a flu vaccine every year. This session will provide information about influenza, including prevention and the importance of flu shots. Getting Started: Setting and Achieving Wellness Goals Our habits and behaviors have the greatest influence on our health. Most of us know what we should do to have better health. So, why can t we change? This session will provide concrete ideas for setting goals and adopting healthier behaviors. Heart Health Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the U.S. Many heart disease risk factors can be modified to reduce disability and death. In this session, information will be shared about the risks for heart disease for men and women, as well as how those risks can be managed. High Blood Pressure In the U.S., about one in three adults has high blood pressure; about half don t have it under control. This session will cover causes, signs, symptoms and risk factors of high blood pressure, as well as prevention and treatment options. Holiday Survival Tips It s not uncommon to struggle with maintaining healthy behaviors during the fall and winter holiday season. This session will provide an opportunity to identify the challenges of the holidays and will discuss strategies for staying on track. Men s Health/Women s Health (Can be addressed separately or combined into one session.) Prevention and management are more achievable with awareness and knowledge. For men, this session will address risk factors, warning signs and prevention strategies for common men s health issues including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, erectile dysfunction and depression. For women, topics will include cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, depression, autoimmune conditions and weight management.
4 Physical Activity Sitting is the New Smoking It is well recognized that tobacco is a killer; now we know that inactivity is too! Weight loss is one reason people exercise; however, during this session you ll hear about a number of other reasons to add it to your daily regimen. We ll also discuss strategies to help you fit exercise into every day. Better Body Mechanics: For Sitters, Standers and Lifters Whatever your activities at work or home, there are risks of injury. In this session, we will address the importance of using good body mechanics in all settings and include demonstration and discussion of implementing regular stretching exercises. Get Moving! How much should you exercise every day? This session will discuss how much and what kind of activities are recommended and some strategies for reaching your goals.
5 Health & Wellness Education Healthy Eating Healthy Eating: Taking Charge Many of us eat more meals away from home and more convenience foods at home, but that s not an excuse to eat unhealthy. This session will explore nutrition traps and pitfalls when eating out or eating fast foods at home, and provide strategies for making healthier food choices. Don t Waste Time with Fad Diets Fad diets make promises that are often not based in fact. In this session, the facts, tricks and traits of fad diets will be discussed. Information about healthy approaches to weight loss will be provided. Feel Full on Fewer Calories Calorie density is the measure of the number of calories in a given weight of food. This session will simplify this concept, provide information about which foods can contribute to feeling full with fewer calories, and help you be strategic in selecting foods. Lunches: Box it or Bag it, Break the Eating Out Habit Bringing your own lunch to work can be good for your health and your budget. This session will address the comparisons of sack lunches vs. restaurant or fast food, and will share tips for planning healthy, fun and fresh sack lunches. No Pill Can Fix a Bad Diet and Not Enough Exercise Our culture leans on medical fixes to solve health problems. This session will address misconceptions about diet pills and suggest better ways to address healthy eating and physical activity to improve health. Nutrition: Get the Facts Experts are saying the only way we can solve the current health crises of diabetes, heart disease and obesity is through healthy eating. This session will address diet and nutrition myths, and provide ideas for balancing diet and exercise for better health. Stress Eating Emotional eating is when we use food for comfort, stress relief or as a reward. This session will address common emotional eating triggers and strategies to manage emotional eating. What s the Poop on Fiber? Having a diet adequate in fiber isn t just about digestive health. This session will explore the influence of dietary fiber on digestion. It also will provide suggestions for adding fiber your diet.
6 Miscellaneous Five Strategies for Health Savings This session will address living healthy, practicing prevention, choosing generic medications, finding and selecting care providers, and getting care in the right place. Health Assessment: Getting Started with BlueAccess This session will show the steps for setting up a BlueAccess account, review some of the resources found there, and show how to complete the WebMD Health Assessment. Stress: What Can You Do? Stress is a key cause of absenteeism and reduced productivity at work. It s also the root cause of many health problems. This session will discuss triggers and impacts of stress. Participants will learn about, and practice, some stress relieving techniques. Group Tobacco Cessation Kick-off This is the initial/recruitment presentation for the kick-off of the BCBSKS tobacco cessation group program. Topics covered include quit methods, quit-aids, and techniques for identifying and dealing with triggers and habits. Tobacco: Risks, Concerns and Issues This session will provide general information about the risks and concerns of all forms of tobacco use, including electronic cigarettes. It also will provide resources for individuals who want to quit tobacco use.
7 Health & Wellness Education Miscellaneous Worksite Tobacco Policies and Electronic Cigarettes Kansas has a Clean Indoor Air Ordinance. This session will include information about e-cigarettes and current concerns around their safety, as well as provide information and resources for a best practices worksite tobacco policy. Wellness in the Workplace: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Resources Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas has many resources and programs available to members which are intended to support them in managing their own health. This session will review the BCBSKS website and programs and resources with an emphasis on the disease management and wellness telephone nurse coaching programs. These programs are available to individuals who have chronic health conditions, and those who want to lose weight or quit using tobacco.
