1. Background An eating disorder is when a person experiences severe changes in eating habits, such as large reduction of food intake, overeating, and feelings of stress about body weight. The main types are anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Bingeeating disorder has also been extensively researched as a main type of eating disorder. "Eating Disorders." National Institute of Mental Health. 26 June National Institues of Health. 7 Oct < 4
2. Anorexia Nervosa Anorexia is characterized by the pursuit of thinness. People with anorexia are unwilling to maintain normal weight and fear gaining weight. They diet and exercise excessively and always see themselves as being overweight, even when they are at a very unhealthy weight. "Eating Disorders." National Institute of Mental Health. 26 June National Institues of Health. 7 Oct < 5

4. Bulimia Nervosa Bulimia is characterized by frequent episodes of eating large amounts of food (binge-eating). People suffering from bulimia feel a lack of control over food so after binge-eating, they compensate for the binge by purging (vomiting, fasting, or laxatives). "Eating Disorders." National Institute of Mental Health. 26 June National Institues of Health. 7 Oct < 7
5. Genetics Recently, doctors have found that eating disorders might be built into some people s genetic makeup. Some researchers have even found the chromosomes that may contribute to anorexia and bulimia (1 and 10). Lynne, Lamberg. "Advances in Eating Disorders Offer Food for Thought." JAMA 2003: Oct < 8
6. Statistics: Females Trying to Lose Weight In , 36.8% of underweight and normal weight females ages years said they tried to lose weight in the previous year. On the other hand, only 10.4% of underweight and normal weight males (ages 16-64) tried to lose weight in the previous year. "NCHS Data on Eating Behaviors." CDC. May Centers for Disease Contol and Prevention. 7 Oct < haviors.htm>. 9
7. True Story Karen, 47, had normal eating habits until 1991, the year her husband died. She developed a severe case of bulimia Melba, Newsome. "Not Just for Kids." Time 29 Aug Oct < 0,9171, ,00.html>. 10
8. Prevention Parenting is one main factor of prevention. Parents need to spend time listening to their children and building strong relationships with them. Education is also necessary to help people realize the consequences of eating disorders. There are many other ways to prevent these disorders, but parenting and education are the most effective. Kelley, Tina. "'Am I Too Fat?'" New York Times 4 Apr. 2004: Oct < 04WEST.html?ex= &en=f22ed8f7eb1b988e&ei=5 070>. 11
9. Treatment There are many treatments. Some of them deal with therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Anti-depressants are also used. In extreme cases, the patient is admitted to a hospital. Now, treatment for disorders is incredibly expensive and most insurance companies don t cover the costs. Because of this, there are lots of untreated people who are further affected. Bennett, Jessica. "Unrealistic Weights." Newsweek 15 Nov Oct < 12
