VITAL SIGNS MONITOR Members Jake Adams David Knoff Maysarah Shahabuddin Clients Dr. John Enderle Dr. Gielo-Perczak

Vital Signs Cardiac Respiratory Pulse oximetry Respiration rate Body Temperature Existing Issues These devices are Expensive Complex in use Only usable in hospital Lack portability

Problem Statement Previously, there was an existing Vital Signs Monitor that could obtain temperature, pulse rate and ECG waveform. This project would include adding some of the following signals: blood oxygen content, respiration rate, motion detector, blood pressure, weight, and blood glucose The existing work was discarded in favor of a new design that allowed us to customize how the information was sent and displayed

Our Solution Mount all sensors on a chest strap Connect to a computer via Bluetooth Gather real-time raw data and outsource all storage and analysis to LabVIEW Benefits User-friendly Portable Customizable Modular

Operation 1. While connected, the user selects the data they want to collect on LabVIEW 2. Master controller requests data from specific sensor via I 2 C interface 3. Sensor sends data back to the Bluetooth antenna 4. Master controller sends data to LabVIEW via Bluetooth 5. LabVIEW interprets and displays the data

Strap Components

Chest Strap Strap o Comfortable strap originating at the control box o Other end is a loop that can be tightened to fit the user Provides structure for sensors to attach o 4 Wires total Ground Clock Data Vcc (3.3v)

Control Box Master for the I2C communication protocol Bluetooth communication antenna o Sends the data to a computer running LabVIEW Use a Motorola Droid 2 3.5V battery for its thin form factor

General Sensor Design Pins contact each of the 4 wires Can be placed anywhere along strap Sends data only when requested

Microcontroller operation Programmed with C++ (Arduino) Wire library used to interface Arduino with I 2 C Arduino Due, the brains inside the control box Atmel ATMega328P: Used in all of the chest strap sensors

Pulse Oximeter Will clip directly to the chest strap, patient chooses location Use the earlobe as a point for transmittance reading Ear Clip Housing

Stethoscope On request from Labview, the stethoscope reads real-time heart sounds from the strap Arduino can only read positive voltage, and patch outputs 2mV peak signal Bioinstrumentation amplifier and DC offset introduced to properly read information

Fall Detection Static and dynamic acceleration 4 mg/lsb sensitivity Inclination measurements of 1 SPI Communication Sparkfun ADXL345

Body Temperature Fast response time High surface area to volume ratio NTC Thermistor 4-wire Wheatstone bridge LabVIEW Programming

Standalone Components ECG Blood Glucose Blood Pressure Weight Scale

ECG Texas Instruments ADS1298RECG-FE Performance Kit Active filters 12 lead configuration Signal integration

Blood Pressure Blood pressure will be monitored via Bluetooth enabled cuff, separate from the main strap Systolic/Diastolic Measurements Withings Blood pressure cuff Data sent to server Stored as Excel file

Weight Withings WS-30 Data logged in server in Excel format Track weight over time LabVIEW extracts data and timestamp

Blood Glucose FORA G31b Data sent to internet server and stored in Excel file Data taken from Excel to display in LabVIEW

Budget Withings WS-30 Bluetooth Scale $ FORA G31b Bluetooth Blood Glucose Meter $ ihealth Bluetooth Blood Pressure Cuff $83.00 Withings Bluetooth Blood Pressure Cuff $ Temperature Sensor $ Blood Oxygen Sensor $38.00 Stethoscope Sensor $45.00 Fall Detection Sensor $27.95 TI ECG Chip $ Mastercontroller $56.44 Microsoft Surface $1, Total Expenses: $2, Total Expenses without Surface: $1, Total Expenses without standalone: $1, Total Expenses with neither: $606.39

Conclusions Communication Low energy Customizable Portability Data collection and analysis

Future Development Correlations between active signals o i.e. ECG and Stethoscope Advanced alarm system o Contact emergency services using Bluetooth
