5 WHY BREAKFAST REALLY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY

6 The Nutrition Connection By eating breakfast, students get more of important nutrients, vitamins and minerals such as calcium, dietary fiber, folate and protein. Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast on a regular basis are less likely to be overweight. Eating breakfast as a child is important for establishing healthy habits for later in life.

8 The Learning Connection Breakfast helps children pay attention, perform problem-solving tasks and improves memory. Children who eat school breakfast are likely to have fewer absences and incidents of tardiness than those who do not. Schools that provide breakfast in the classroom to all students have shown decreases in tardiness and suspensions as well as improved student behavior and attentiveness.

51 Breakfast After 1 st Period/Second Chance Breakfast What is it? Breakfast is served during the morning recess or break, usually between 9 and 10 a.m. Conventional breakfast in the cafeteria is typically maintained Breakfasts may duplicate the meal served earlier in the cafeteria or it may be a grab-and-go type meal Use of student PINs or swipe cards ensures that each student eats only one breakfast

60 INCREASES ENHANCES ENGAGES IMPROVES Sensational s MOOthies participation, a la carte sales, milk sales, yogurt sales dining spaces, point of sale, school meal image students, nutrition staff your bottom line I used to serve about 40 meals every morning during our regular breakfast time from 7-7:50 a.m. Now, in addition to the 40 meals we serve during our regular breakfast time, we usually serve meals at our second chance breakfast. Kids love the smoothies. The little kiddos look forward to Smoothie Tuesdays. They think we are serving a treat, not a nutritious breakfast item. In my world, this is a win-win situation. 61 Hooray for Parfait INCREASES ENHANCES ENGAGES REDUCES IMPROVES participation, a la carte sales, yogurt sales dining space, point of sale, school meal image students, nutrition staff food costs, labor costs your bottom line Yogurt parfaits can be made with a variety of fruits, from popular peaches to pretty red frozen strawberries. The layers of granola, yogurt and the fruit are very attractive and enticing. This has been a great breakfast item for our district. Cafeteria managers were taken by surprise when they had to make more parfaits for breakfast than they expected because the students were so eager to try them. June Hayman M.S., L.D. 62 Marketing Moo-lah Marketing Moo-lah provides ways for you to increase dairy consumption through promotion, education and engagement. In Laredo ISD, Child Nutrition program promotes milk consumption in Breakfast line, BIC, Grab n GO, Lunch program, after school Program, sack lunch, field trips and more. For this reason we created the Milk Moustache Campaign District Posters where our personalities are our successful athletes.

63 Dairy MAX has funds available for K-12 schools participating in the National School Lunch Program. Dairy MAX offers grants up to $2 per student enrolled at the school implementing the new program.
