11 FOUNDATION, MISSION & VISION Foundation Integral component of the presidential initiative (2016): Health 2025 Formally established in July ST global health institute in MENA Mission The Global Health Institute at AUB addresses global health challenges with a focus on context and sustainable impact by employing an interdisciplinary approach. The primary focus of GHI are challenges that are affecting the MENA region, but have relevance to and impact on other regions in the Global South. Vision GHI is the regional leader and a key partner in defining and addressing the global health agenda, especially components relevant to the MENA region and other regions in the Global South. GHI will transform the global health dialogue to focus on contextualized solutions that are sustainable and proportionally dependent on local and regional capacity. 11

28 REVEALED IN THE WOUND A, a 28 year old Iraqi policeman, sustained lower limb threatening injuries when he threw himself on a suicide bomber. Because of the circumstances of his injury, family and colleagues successfully lobbied for A's limb to be salvaged rather than amputated. For over two months however, physicians in Iraq were unable to operate due to a recurring wound infection. He was transferred to the AUBMC and found to have MDR E Coli. B, a 15 year-old girl shot in the face by snipers in Homs, developed osteomyelitis of the mandible after inappropriate internal fixation and subsequently required more complex reconstruction using a fibula free flap. 28

30 THE WAR MACHINE & WAR ENTERPRISE War Machine is used to describe vast war industries the international weapons trade.the saber-rattling ideologies and policies that justify and encourage war. -- Merrill and Hodge War Enterprise Includes the international and regional countries that support the various protagonists; the arms manufacturers; the states that bankroll the protagonists; the companies that ship the arms all the way from the factory to the battleground; and the banks that facilitate the enterprise and the inevitable army of middle men. In addition to these international forces, the war enterprise includes the local components created by the Ecology of War. 30
