5 A new dimension in BREAST CANCER detection When Mary Hickenbottom scheduled her recent mammogram at ProHealth Care, she was told she could choose to have either a traditional two-dimensional mammogram or a 3D mammogram. With a family history of breast cancer, Mary chose 3D mammography the more advanced technology. 3D mammography enables radiologists to view breast tissue through a series of thin, detailed images or slices instead of two-dimensional pictures. Research shows that this advanced technology may detect up to 40 percent more cancers than digital mammography alone. Since early spring, ProHealth Care s free Garden Talk series has guided individuals through the growing season to show how easy it is to cultivate produce at home. The classes included hands-on experience in the vegetable garden at ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital that s now overflowing with ripe peppers, tomatoes, onions, root vegetables and a variety of herbs. As the weather begins cool over the next several weeks, volunteers will pick and donate the vegetables to the Food Pantry of Waukesha County to enhance the health and wellbeing of our community. 7 Virtually scarless surgery available at ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital Robotic hysterectomy offers additional options and benefits to patients When Tina Wright went to see ProHealth Medical Group obstetrician/ gynecologist Kari Oliver, MD, for her an annual checkup, little did she know a mystery would be solved. Dr. Oliver found a mass, which helped explain why I had been having some bladder and bowel problems and a low blood count, says Tina. Looking back, I was having some discomfort, but I didn t think much about it at the time. It was a fibroid mass that was causing it. Kari Oliver, MD A hysterectomy was required. Jessica Herzberg, MD Cara Bowman had experienced a year of pain and increasingly longer menstrual cycles before seeking an answer from ProHealth Medical Group obstetrician/gynecologist Jessica Herzberg, MD. Dr. Herzberg found a fibroid outside of my uterus that was causing the problems, Cara says. It was about the size of a small apple. I could have had the fibroid removed or the entire uterus. I opted to have the hysterectomy. Other than Caesarean section, hysterectomy is the most common surgical procedure performed on women. Approximately 500,000 surgeries are performed each year, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A hysterectomy removes the uterus and may also include the removal of the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes and some surrounding tissue. Hysterectomy often is recommended for benign fibroid tumors, cancerous tumors, uterine prolapse, endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain. Nationally, about two-thirds of hysterectomies are open surgeries. The surgeon removes the uterus through an incision that is five to seven inches long across the abdomen. Hospitalization usually lasts three or more days. Laparoscopic hysterectomies are minimally invasive options. Laparoscopic surgery involves one or more small incisions in the belly or belly button. Surgical tools and a lighted camera are inserted through the incisions and the uterus is removed, either through the incisions or the vagina. Advantages include smaller incisions, less blood loss, less pain, shorter hospital stays, a lower rate of complications and shorter recovery times. Both Tina and Cara were candidates for a new minimally invasive option single-site robotic surgery that is being used in an increasing number of cases at ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital.
