1 Russell Square International College University of London Recognised Teaching Centre in collaboration with Research Centre for Women's Studies SNDT Women's University Organizes Panel Discussion on WORLDWIDE CONVERSATION ON WOMEN IN HIGHER EDUCATION & EQUALITY AT WORK PLACE th Thursday, 25 October, 2018
2 Concept Note The year 1868 was a new beginning for women in UK when a 'Special Examinations' was conducted by the University of London (UOL) for the first time in its history. Women in UK did not have access to higher education until UOL took this initiative. In order to commemorate this event, Dr. Mary Stiasny, Pro Vice Chancellor of University of London has launched 'Worldwide Conversation on Women in Higher th Education & Equality at Work Place' on 19 September 2018 at London in UK. Russell Square International College (RSIC), University of London Recognized Teaching Centre, established in 2004 delivering BSc (EMFSS) courses of London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) and BBA of Royal Holloway, in collaboration with Research Centre for Women's Studies (RCWS, established in 1974), SNDT Women's University (established in 1916) is organizing a Panel Discussion, th on 25 October 2018 to highlight status of women in higher education and gender equality at work place in the Indian Subcontinent with special reference to India.
3 Statistics on Women in India The Census Report 2011 confirms that women constitute 48.53% of the total population of India. Literacy rate of female population is 64.6% and the Gross Enrolment Ratio(GER) at higher secondary school is 56.5%, which drops sharply to 23.5% at the college/higher education(aisha) though the gap is narrow in GER of men and women at higher education level. GER at higher education for male population in India is 25.4% whereas for females it is 23.5%. As a matter of fact it has been reported that the gender gap at higher education has narrowed considerably in South Asia though women lag behind in the field of science, mathematics and technology. Nevertheless, despite these positive trends towards women's higher education, empowerment of female population in decision making process in India is not encouraging. There are innumerable campaigns both from the government as well as non-government agencies in digital media for empowerment of women. But, in spite of such measures, statistics on women work force reveals downtrend. Women work force was 35% in 2005, which has declined to 26% and out of the total 26%
4 merely 5% women are working in formal / organized sector. One of the Reports of World Bank suggests that if women work force increases in India, it can add up to 1.5% to India's GDP. Apparently these are matters of concern and demands focused analysis and debate. What keeps women confined to their domestic walls and what are the socio-economics constraints that hold them back? These issues need to be studied thoroughly to bring women to the mainstream of socio-economic and political establishment. Approximately 74% of India's 50% of the total population is out of work and have no contribution towards economy of the nation despite overall rise in participation of women in higher education. Can India, with these constraints, achieve the target of (a) sustainable economic growth(b) GDP in double digits? One research findings suggests that bridging the gender gap brings financial benefits to the economy of the world and hence needs serious attention and prioritization. Deliberations on these issues may show a path forward towards improving participation of women in the politico-economic and social turf in this part of the world.
