Do some difficult or failing students actually have a mental health condition or an unrecognised diagnosis? We will identify avoidance tactics & barriers to education which may be based in mental health conditions. We will examine how those higher functioning students who can mask their feelings, may present in education. And we will investigate some quick fixes and share good practice. SEND & Mental health conditions Recognising MH barriers to education How can we help 1.2 Alcohol and drug addiction Michelle Dennett, Head of Student Experience, Yeovil College Michelle will discuss how Yeovil College partners with external agencies and uses volunteer councillors to support students with alcohol and drug addiction. There will be time built into the session for discussions and questions. 1.3 Digital - How To Make Social Media Friend not Foe Grace Barrett, Co-Founder, The Self Esteem Team In the digital age we regularly see teens floundering under the pressure of social media. Conversely, they are at least one step ahead of their adult counterparts where setting trends and using the platforms are concerned. So, it s easy to feel

3 out of your depth in terms of helping them manage the stresses they bring. This session will equip you with the tools to do just that. Working with several FE colleges across the country as an initial pilot, two of whom will be co-presenting the session, the Partnership aims to identify, develop, disseminate and evaluate mental health training in colleges to meet specific needs, as identified by the colleges themselves. This will lead to a national resource base of free FE-specific mental health training resources to help support colleges in their work around mental health, developed collaboratively and using an evidence-base. The value and importance of third-sector involvement in FE The development of bespoke training materials in FE in collaboration between a number of key stakeholders The experiences of two colleges in their early work with CWMT in mental health training development. 15:55 Adult learners and mental health Catina Barret, Community Learning Mental Health Research project There s a memorable statement in the Children and Young People s Mental Health Green Paper, Transforming children and young people s mental health provision about how far behind children and young people with mental health problems fall in their education.

5 In this presentation we will present key lessons learned from the DfE Community Learning Mental Health research (2015/18). We will share highlights from our journey, including what some project leads and heads of service have described as the pain of research and social metrics and the pleasure of a project that enabled them to reconnect with the values of community learning and has given them a new narrative to evidence its impact.
