1 KALINDI COLLEGE (University of Delhi) NAAC Accredited with Grade A East Patel Nagar, New Delhi : ; Fax No.: kalindisampark.du@gmail.com Website: To commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the College The Department of Journalism ANNOUNCES TWO-DAY NATIONAL SEMINAR On 23 rd & 24 th March, 2017 Women s Rights and Responsibilities in Progressive India: A Discourse

2 Concept Note Department of Journalism, Kalindi College, University of Delhi is organising a National Seminar on Women s Rights and Responsibilities in Progressive India: A Discourse to be held on 23 rd & 24 th March, This Seminar will be of great interest to faculty, research scholars, and experts of Women s studies. It would debate and assess the issues of women in the present time where India claims to be the highly progressive nation. The Department invites scholars to participate in the seminar and present a paper on any topic related to the theme of the seminar. THE SEMINAR THEME OUTLINE: Violence against women is a grave violation of human rights. According to an estimate, one in three women across the world experiences violence. As a women rights activist said- It happens inside homes, in families, in neighborhoods, in police stations, in towns and cities, in villages, and its incidence increases, as is happening in India, as society goes through change, as women s roles begin to change, as economies slow down and the slice of pie becomes smaller. Violence against women is rooted in discrimination and inequality, making it challenging to address. Men and women who have not had opportunities to question gender roles, attitudes and beliefs, cannot change them. Women who are unaware of their rights cannot claim them. Governments and organizations without access to standards, guidelines and tools cannot adequately address these issues. Once evidence accumulates and awareness grows, the potential for stopping all forms of violence does too. Public awareness and education is essential to changing social and cultural norms which perpetuate harmful practices. Women and girls should be supported in their

3 efforts to empower themselves and demand respect for their rights. In addition, while all members of society should be made aware of their responsibilities to ensure the rights of the women, it should be clarified that the harmful practices of the society impact not just the women and girls but the larger community as well. However, the issues of women have been widely talked that women had been placed in so depressed a social position and so excluded from political and intellectual spheres that the cause of women s improvement was taken up by men and not women. It has been an increasing demand of the modern women s movements that women themselves should be their due space in the political and other spheres to win and protect their own rights and get opportunity to play an equal role in the entire range of socio-political and economic fields. The extensive discussions on Marxism and the question of women s rights under Socialism are quite relevant here. The seminar wishes to provide a platform to deliberate upon relevant issues so that women and policy makers well understand the rights and responsibilities of women. In this context, this seminar proposes to address the following broad topics: The need for awareness regarding Women Rights- Internationally and in India. Looking at the linkages between social discrimination and inequality and women rights. Examine the process of women s empowerment legally, historically and sociologically Deliberating upon ways and means to deal with the dynamics of governance and women rights. Examining the complex relationship between policy and politics in relation to women rights. Examine the extent of affirmative action in favour of women in education and employment. Role of Educational Institutions in promoting Women Rights Democratic Journey and moments of Introspections: Status of Women in Indian Society Demand for justice: Feminist movements in India

4 Violence against women and role of media Advancing women rights through social media Role of ICTs in Creating Awareness about Women Rights EXPECTED OUTCOMES OF THE SEMINAR With this seminar we expect to deliberate and thus expand the social awareness against grave issues of sexual harassment and domestic violence. We are hopeful to come up with effective suggestions for government, educational institutions and media in relation to their role in promoting women. NOTES: 1. The above list is only suggestive, not all-inclusive. However, the ultimate objective of the seminar is to receive papers which after due processing and refereed selection, can be published as an edited book with ISBN from a reputed publisher. 2. In the area concerning chosen sub-theme, a 300 word Abstract must be sent latest by 3 rd March, 2017 on journalismkalindi.seminar@gmail.com 3.
