11 Which do you think is better for people with diabetes? (Fruit Juice / Regular Soda) Equal amounts of Fruit Juice and Regular Soda have approximately the same amount of carbohydrate. Either can fit into the meal plan, however ½ cup of either has ~15 grams of carb. With most females needing 45 grams of carb per meal (and most men 60 grams of carb per meal), 1 twelve oz soda would be all the carb allowed for a meal. Can people with diabetes have sweet cereal in their meal plan? (Yes / No) Yes, the key is the total amount of carb in a meal, not the source of the carb. All carbohydrate breaks down into glucose in the blood stream

17 On the Nutrition Facts label which gives the best information? (Sugar or Total Carb) Total carbohydrate is the information we need to focus on. The American Diabetes Association research shows that the total amount of carbohydrate consumed is more important than the source of the carbohydrate 15 grams of carbohydrate is equal to one carbohydrate choice or one carbohydrate exchange. 45 grams of carbohydrate per meal is typical for most women and 60 grams of carbohydrate per meal is typical for most men.

18 High protein diets like Dr. Atkins and Sugar Busters are good for diabetes? (T or F) This is false. Our brains and our muscles work off glucose provided by carbs. High protein diets can be dangerous by damaging kidney function

19 Grapefruit juice burns calories and fat (T or F) This is also false. Grapefruit juice and most other fruit juices have 15 grams of carb per 4 oz. serving. Grapefruit juice contains no special properties that will burn fat. More than 1/2 of the food we eat in a day should come from? (Carb, Pro, Fat) Carb is the correct answer. Most meal plans will have approximately 50 55% from carbs, with approximately 20% from protein and less than 30% from fast

20 Eating protein provides quick energy? (T or F) False. Carbohydrate is the preferred energy source for our brains and our muscles. Protein is used as a building block in the body to build cells, tissues, heal wounds, etc. Fat is broken down with a by-product of ketones that the body can use for energy, however this is not the preferred source. Cereal, milk and juice is a well balanced breakfast (T or F) False the protein in the liquid milk is not as stabilizing for blood sugar, appetite or energy level as a solid source of protein. A protein food should be included with each meal

21 With diabetes sugar is the problem? (yes/ no) No The problem with diabetes is that the body does not make any or enough insulin. This is a problem with the pancreas which produces insulin. Diabetes is a body problem not a sugar problem. People with diabetes need to eat special foods to control blood sugar? (T or F) False people with diabetes have the same nutritional needs as any other healthy person. There are no special foods required to control blood sugar. There are guidelines for portion size and balance, which if not followed could be more harmful for people with diabetes.
