6 III. WRITING SAMPLES Sample Student Introduction 1: This introduction does a great job of explaining what the Industrial Revolution was, but is still missing a thesis. It says its effects were seen in the working class, but doesn t identify whether they were ultimately positive or negative. Sample Student Introduction 2: This introduction also does a great job of explaining what the Industrial Revolution was and why it was important. What makes is stronger is that part at the bottom. The student identifies that ultimately it was a blessing, but for the working class during the time, it was a curse. This is a strong thesis. 6

7 Sample Student Body Paragraph: This is a strong body paragraph. It starts off with a basic topic sentence that allows them to expand on it as the paragraph continues. Student has document evidence, but does not just copy from the document or describe it. However, I would have liked a specific quote from the document in the paragraph. The student adds to the information in the document and includes outside information about diseases and alcoholism to help further make their point. Sample Student Conclusion: This is a good example of a conclusion. The student restates the main ideas and summarizes their points. Finally, they restate their thesis at the end. 7
