On Friday, February 26, Dr. Chris Barwacz (Department of Family Dentistry) presented a lecture and hands-on course on Dental Implant Provisionalization Protocols for Maximizing Peri-Implant Mucosal Outcomes. Saturday s speakers included Dr. Anton Sculean (University of Bern, Switzerland), who spoke on regenerative and periodontal plastic surgery, and Dr. Massimo Simion (University of Milano, Italy), who lectured on vertical ridge augmentation. Dr. Mike Franzman (adjunct faculty, Department of Periodontics) moderated the Graduate Student Research Forum held in conjunction with the meeting. At the business meeting, Dr. Paula Weistroffer was installed as the new president of the Midwest Society of Periodontology, and Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz was elected to the Council. In addition to the outstanding educational program, faculty and residents enjoyed a dinner together on Saturday evening. 2 Page 2 College of Dentistry Students Attend the American Student Dental Association Meeting in Dallas Several College of Dentistry students attended the recent American Student Dental Association (ASDA) meeting in Dallas, Texas: Sean Harvey (D3), Shaun O Neill (D3), Taylor Austin (D2), Sophia Chen (D2), Aaron Kotecki (D2), Macaira Leahy (D2), and Erica Recker (D2). Erica Recker presented research, Biomarkers of Inflammation around Implants Versus Natural Teeth. Co-authors on this research included Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz (Periodontics), Dr. Carol Fischer (Dental Research), Keyla Pagan-Rivera (Biostatistics), Dr. Kim Brogden (director of Dental Research), Dr. Deborah Dawson (director, Biostatistics), and Dr. Satheesh Elangovan (Periodontics). Shaun O Neill was honored with the District 8 Delegate of the Year during the meeting. He also received the first-ever Executive Committee s Citation for all of his legislative work. I enrolled in a biological anthropology class on a whim. I didn t know much about the subject but quickly became fascinated by the study of human evolution. How does your research area dovetail with orthodontics? If you would like to help Derek by contributing vacation time, please fill out the form at: Word Play: Shaggy Dog Story A botanist was trying to research some details about a particular kind of fern, so he sent a request to all his colleagues, asking them to send him any information they had about it. Unfortunately, he didn't word his request very well, and all the botanists he'd contacted thought he was looking for details about any ferns, rather than just the one species. So within just a few hours of sending it out, his fax machine was buzzing with piles of useless documents about all kinds of ferns - there were tree ferns and wood ferns, ostrich ferns and cinnamon ferns... but very few about the particular type he wanted. So he sent another message to everyone: If it ain't bracken, don't fax it.
