Jane Chalmers and Ronald Ettinger Lecture at the National University of Singapore & National Dental Centre Dr. Jane Chalmers, Preventive & Community Dentistry, and Dr. Ronald Ettinger, Prosthodontics and Dows, lectured at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the National Dental Centre (NDC) for the week March 19-26, Dr. Ettinger and Dr. Chalmers each gave seven lectures during their week-long visit: two days of lectures for undergraduate, graduate students and faculty at the NUS, a oneday CE course for general dental practitioners, and a one-day program at the NDC for NDC staff which included dental hygienists, therapists, graduate students and representatives from the Health Promotion Board. They attended other meetings and focus groups, including meetings with the chief dental officer for Singapore, the dean and his staff of NUS, and the curriculum committee at NUS. They also visited with Iowa alumni: Dr. Jennifer Neo ( 84, Operative Dentistry), Dr. May Lin Chen ( 79, Fixed Prosthodontics), and Dr. Stephen Hsu ( 94, Pediatric Dentistry and 97, PhD Dentist-Scientist). See photos below and on page 2. Alumnus M. Todd Brandt ( 99 DDS) Honors Memory of Dean James McLeran with Book Dedication An Iowa dental school alumnus recently honored the memory of former UI College of Dentistry Dean James H. McLeran by dedicating a book in his memory. McLeran, who served as dean from 1974 to 1995, died in (Left) M. Todd Brandt DDS ( 99), MD, who edited Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America, noted McLeran s contributions to the profession of dentistry with the following dedication: This issue of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America is dedicated to the memory of Dr. James H. McLeran, Dean of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry from 1974 to His guidance and wisdom as a dental educator and oral and maxillofacial surgeon were without parallel. His leadership guided generations, helping to successfully shape dentistry across the country. My career and continual pursuit of excellence as a dentist, physician, and oral and maxillofacial surgeon would not have been possible without his mentorship. Dr. Brandt is service chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, Va., where he also has a private practice, Blue Ridge Oral Surgery. In a message to the College, Brandt wrote, Dean McLeran was a role model for me and a wonderful man. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and Iowa grad, I know what he did to help my career and the impact his legacy has had on dentistry across the country. 2 Recognize Your Co-Worker The Ambassador Club Program recognizes staff who have shown a special commitment to promoting excellence in the teaching, research, patient care, or administrative functions of the College of Dentistry. One individual is recognized semiannually from a list of nominations, which are screened and selected by a committee made up of previous Ambassador Club awardees. Eligible for consideration is any merit staff or professional and scientific employee who has demonstrated special qualities in performing their daily tasks. Nominations may be made by students, staff, faculty, alumni or patients. Nomination forms, program guidelines, and a listing of Ambassadors are available on the IntraDent under Services > Dental Human Resources. 3 Collegiate Dental Researchers: NIH Public Access Policy Training Session Chris Shaffer, Hardin Library Wednesday, April 9, 2008 Noon 1pm Dean s Conference Room The NIH Public Access Policy ensures that the public has access to the published results of NIH funded research. It required scientists to submit journal articles that arise from NIH funds to the digital archive PubMed Central. The Policy requires that these articles be accessible to the public on PubMed Central to help advance science and improve human health. By the end of this session, attendees will be able to: Identify articles subject to the policy; Retain copyright to ensure policy compliance; Submit articles as a PI or agent; Confirm agents submissions; Approve final copy; Cite using PubMed Central reference numbers. Ricardo Schwedhelm Clinical Associate Professor Department of Restorative Dentistry University of Washington Candidate for Faculty Position in Prosthodontics Dental Laboratory Verdict: Accept or Reject Several laboratory steps are involved in the fabrication of definitive restorations. It is imperative that the dental practitioner provides the dental laboratory with proper diagnostic casts, acceptable impressions, records and precise instructions.
