Did you predict the ending? Discuss with the person next to you what you predicted correctly.
As a class we are going to annotate the Inspector s final speech. Consider how Priestley is trying to show his views through the Inspector.
Inspector: But just remember this. One Eva Smith has gone but there are millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still left with us, with their lives, their hopes and fears, their suffering and chance of happiness, all intertwines with our lives, with what we think and say and do. We don t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other. And I tell you that the time will come when, if will not learn their lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish. Good night.
Objectives: To understand the importance of the Inspector s final speech. To be able to identify and understand the main ideas in An Inspector Calls and explain how language contributes to Priestley s ideas.
How does Priestley use language in the Inspector s final speech to voice his views on society? Answer using PETER and comment on the effect on the audience. Key Words:
Priestley uses language in the Inspector s final speech to show his views on society being responsible for each other: We are members of one body. The Inspector uses the pronoun we to indicate that everyone is responsible for what happens in the society we live in. The phrase members of one body suggests that we are not individuals but whatever we do affects others, therefore we need to care and respect everyone. A 1945 audience would possibly agree with the Inspector s and Priestley s point of view as they have just experienced World War II and possibly World War I and understand the importance of community.
