We will examine the difference in caregiving supports during the acute hospitalization and post-acute rehabilitative phases by race and gender and determine if these differences partially account for previously observed race and gender differences in outcomes. Role: Co-investigator Completed Kirschstein NRSA Predoctoral Fellowship to Promote Diversity 1F31AG A1 Perkins (PI) 8/19/2008 8/18/2010 NIH/NIA Caregiving strain, physical health, and mortality The NRSA fellowship training allowed me to develop my research proficiency, establish collaborative relationships across UAB, and expand my knowledge base in the field of gerontology. The training presented the opportunity to examine the risk factors for all cause mortality in those who provide care and expand on an area of research that has limited literature available. 3 Psychosocial Impact of Stroke on Family Caregivers The goals of this project were to measure the long-term effects of stroke disability on family caregivers, to estimate rates of health care utilization after stroke for a national sample of stroke survivors, and to compare outcomes of African American and White family caregivers of stroke survivors.
