1 Department of Humanities and Sciences (310) Quarter: Spring, 2015 Zen and the Art of Self-Transformation through Awareness Training Psychology Reg#: Instructor: Jeffrey Hutter, PhD Date: Saturday, May 2, 2015 Time: 9:00 AM 4:30 PM Course Syllabus Location: 170 Dodd Hall, UCLA Campus, Westwood, CA Course Description: This course focuses on the personal, emotional and spiritual benefits of cultivating a mindful way of living. Students learn about meditation and other transformational methods of deepening awareness, centering and focusing, emotional healing and stress reduction. Bridging Eastern and Western approaches, this workshop integrates traditional Buddhist mindfulness with current Western insight and awareness training, offering a method to enhance personal life, work, and relationships. Participants are introduced to skills that can calm the mind and foster a sense of well-being. According to the teachings of Zen, contemplative self-study can reveal the wellsprings of creative and spiritual experience leading to wisdom and compassion, an understanding and appreciation of existence in all its possible forms, as well as experiences of deep calm and concentration. Zen practice, with its emphasis on learning how to experience things as they are, free of preconception and fear, can lead to clarity of mind as well as deep insight into "our original nature" i.e., our unrecognized natural potential. Target Audience: This program is applicable to persons wanting to discover the connection between emotional health, growth and well-being, personal integration and practical methods of deepening awareness, including Zen. This approach can be useful for individuals going through transitions or anticipating making significant life changes, as well as for self-development. ******************** 1
