As you read this issue, keep in mind the amazing women that work throughout the community educating and enrolling eligible participants into our prevention and screening programs. There are 10 promotoras and one Certified Medical Assistant that make up the outreach components of ACCION, BEST, De Casa en Casa and Time to Get Vaccinated! As trustworthy members of the surrounding community, our promotoras deliver culturally appropriate services and serve as a patient advocate, educator, mentor and supporter. Due to the trust that is built with community members, promotoras easily serve as a bridge between the community and the systems of health care, government and social service. By eliminating these existing barriers, promotoras are able to simplify access to services and enhance the quality of service delivery along with building individual and community capacity through the increase of health knowledge and self-sufficiency through outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy (American Public Health Association, 2008). Promotoras Recruitment Numbers Throughout the existence of all programs [ACCION 1 & 2, De Casa en Casa, BEST & Time to Vaccinate!], promotoras have managed to enroll a total of 12,585 participants from El Paso County since Below is a detailed description of each program s recruitment numbers: ACCION 1 [March 2012 February 2015] : 9339 ACCION 2 [March 2015 current] : 1190 De Casa en Casa [June 2014 current] : 1053 BEST [August 2014 current] : 929 Time to Get Vaccinated! Program recruitment started at the end of March and since then, the ACCION promotoras continue to identify new recruitment sites and develop new partnerships with community agencies which have expanded outreach efforts to groups of people that are were not being reached before. One such partnership is the work ACCION has done with the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank. Perla Chaparro, AmeriCorps VISTA Health Partnership organizer, says she contacted ACCION because the population that goes to food distributions sites and mobile food pantries are people that for the most part have little health knowledge and no insurance. I admire the work the promotoras do and have witnessed how they respectfully approach people and deliver the education. I see how people ask many questions and how the promotoras help them understand how important CRC prevention is they are making a positive change! Of the 1190 people enrolled into ACCION since March 2015: 1129 were eligible to receive FIT kits 29 were eligible for a colonoscopy screening due to being high risk 12 people received Education Only because they were up to date with CRC screening 20 people eligible for Education Navigation 38 people completed their screening or diagnostic colonoscopy Time to Get Vaccinated! The Time to Get Vaccinated program started in earnest in June and to date has done outreach at over 50 sites, including collaboration with El Paso Community College and UTEP which at the moment is generating much vaccine interest among year olds. Three promotoras lead recruitment efforts while one CMA administers the HPV vaccine to eligible participants. So far, the program can say it has been successful in mobilizing the community and has recently partnered with Tropicana Properties, which has over 28 sites where enrollment efforts will be targeted to prevent HPV among El Paso s youth. Time to Get Vaccinated! numbers are: 87 enrolled 30 community presentations to describe program goals 9 health fairs

As of August 2015, we have recruited a total of 571 participants, of which 517 were eligible for screening with an 80% pap completion rate.

3 Page 3 of 5 CPEP De Casa en Casa Since the distribution of our initial newsletter, the De Casa en Casa program has seen a consistent increase in both recruiting and screening numbers. In the last three months we have witnessed the program s highest figures since its commencement. As of August 2015, we have recruited a total of 571 participants, of which 517 were eligible for screening with an 80% pap completion rate. Due to these figures, our totals for Year 2 are on pace to exceed our target goal. With the hope of recruiting from Hudspeth County in the near future, De Casa should continue to see growth. It takes 15 to 20 years for cervical cancer to develop in women with normal immune systems. In total, De Casa En Casa has collected and completed the following: 1,059 Total recruitment/program implementation 862 Eligible for pap screening; of which 589 completed pap screening 115 Eligible for BCCS; of which 26 completed pap screening 48 Eligible for navigation 11 Eligible for education Since the program s implementation in June of 2014, findings have yielded: 40 Pap positive results 10 CIN1 results 1 Cancer BEST (Breast Education, Screening & NavigaTion) In recent months, the BEST program has proven that its need throughout the community is at an alltime high. Similar to the De Casa program, BEST has continued to witness some of its largest figures, with totals for Year 2 showing a total recruitment of 568 participants, of which 512 were eligible for screening. With the month of October around the corner, we would appreciate your support in collaborating with us in order to spread awareness. As of April 2015, BEST has collected and completed the following: 229 Comparison Surveys Recruitment[2] 77 Four Month Follow-Up Comparison Surveys[2] 937 Total Recruitment/Program Implementation 847 Eligible for mammogram screening; of which 731 completed screening About 70% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no known risk factors for it at all. Since the program s implementation in August of 2014, findings have yielded: 127 diagnostic screening cases 46 abnormal cases 4 cancer cases

The Research Division Team, which is all the CPRIT funded programs, celebrated its achievements and how all members promotoras, coordinators, data entry and navigators contribute to the mission of preventing cancer in El Paso by participating in a team building training to keep up morale and have fun!
