Lori Millner of AHEC East presented her poster Comparing Community-Based Breast Cancer Education and Navigation Programs: Disparate Outcomes Among African American and Hispanic Targeted Populations in North Texas which utilized community health workers and Ashley Rodriguez of DSHS presented her poster The Utilization of Quality Improvement in Epidemiologic Investigation: Lessons Learned from Measuring, Monitoring and Recalibrating at the TPHA 2017 Annual Education Conference in Fort Worth, March 27-29, TPHA is a statewide community for discussion, sharing best practices, and networking among public health professionals in Texas.

2 Hispanic Wellness Coalition (HWC) Sponsorship DFW-CHW Association is pleased to announce that we ve partnered with the Hispanic Wellness Coalition (HWC) and will be sponsoring their 2 public health screening events this year. 19th Annual North Texas Wellness Fair This event offers a wide range of FREE medical screenings to the public along with exercise and cooking demonstrations and more. The NTWF is designed to provide access to health care prevention services and information to those who cannot afford it. The objective is to break the barriers of communication by introducing health services to participants and build trust among the providers and those in need. 3 Unity Conference 2017: The Collective Power of CHWs, CHRs and Promotores Unity 2017 is a national conference designed for and about community health workers. The theme for this year s conference is The Collective Power of CHWs, CHRs and Promotores. Unity 2017 will address the roles community health workers play in creating access to care, reducing care costs, and promoting healthy and happy communities, from individual levels to meeting national goals and objectives. Conference speakers will address content on state and national organizing, including strategies for successful advocacy; health and wellness, including oral health, behavioral health, and addressing disabilities; and the role of community health workers as change agents, including in communities and in systems. The conference will include plenary, breakout, poster, skillbuilding, and round-table workshop sessions. Unity 2017 is an opportunity for community health workers to network, share knowledge, exchange information and expertise with other community health workers, colleagues, and policy makers. 15th annual Unity Conference August 6-9, 2017 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas. For questions about the Unity Conference 2017, contact Dr. Susan Mayfield-Johnson at (601) or susan.johnson@usm.edu DFW-CHW Association Offers Unity Conference Scholarship The DFW-CHW Association is offering a scholarship to one DFW-CHW Association member to cover the cost of attending this year s Unity Conference in Dallas, TX on August 6-7th, Please note: This scholarship will only cover the cost of registration, the applicant is responsible for any additional expenses. In order to apply you must be a current member of the association and submit your responses to the following questions: Applicant s Full Name: Applicant s Contact Are you a CHW or CHW Instructor? 4 HPV Vaccination Intervention in Community and Clinical Settings The DFW-CHW Association is excited to announce a partnership with the School of Public Health at the University of Texas in Houston. Together, we will work to implement the For Our Daughters (Por Nuestras Hijas) HPV vaccination education program. The purpose of this project is to disseminate the program across the state in order to increase HPV vaccination among Hispanic adolescents. This theorybased, multi-component intervention was developed to increase HPV vaccination among Hispanic girls and boys between the ages of years. Program Materials include: Fotonovela (printed): Portrays stories with images and dialogue between mothers that decide to vaccinate their daughters against HPV. Storytelling format that helps communicate health information to individuals with low literacy. Web Application (App): Self-directed, interactive app deliverable on smartphones, ipads and tablets, computers, or online. It provides tailored information about cervical cancer, HPV related diseases, and the HPV vaccine through presentations, images with voiceover and video clips, where barriers and other questions are discussed. How it works? CHW educates families. Takes minutes, which is less than the average wait time at a clinic. Available in English and Spanish. We need our members help! More specifically, we need 12 CHWs and/or CHWIs to help us reach 2,400 families. You will need to: Attend a 4-hour training to learn how to deliver the educational material. (Tentative date is scheduled for Saturday, June 17th). Work with the association or with a partner organization to deliver educational material to community members. You can receive a compensation of up to $200 for your assistance in providing education to communities. If you re interested in joining the project team, please contact denise.hernandez@dfwchw.org

5 Member Spotlight: Katharine Miller Nimmons, M.Sc., MPH, CHW National Community Health Worker Training Center The DFW-CHW Association is pleased to announce it s Member Spotlight series. This month s meeting will feature Katharine Miller Nimmons, M.Sc., MPH, CHW the Director of Texas A&M National CHW Training Center. The National Community Health Worker Training Center is a DSHS-certified CHW training center within the Texas A&M University School of Public Health s Center for Community Health Development. Since 2001, the center has provided over 98,000 hours of certification and CEUs to more than 4,100 CHWs, in -person and online, in English and in Spanish. Instructors are based in Dallas, College Station, Corpus Christi, McAllen, and Brownsville. In addition to training, the National CHW Training Center has expertise in research and evaluation, curriculum development, and other forms of technical assistance for CHWs and organizations.
