2 Healthy Foods News Tips To Quit Smoking: East Carolina University Completes Survey On Area Farmers Markets & Roadside Produce Stands Last summer, the PICH Evaluation Team from East Carolina University (ECU) surveyed 263 customers at 15 farmers markets and produce stands in eastern North Carolina. Customers reported that the reasons they shopped at farmers markets included being able to get fresher produce there, that produce from the farmers market tastes better, they wanted to support the local farmers, and they liked the friendly atmosphere. Customers said that there were challenges to shopping at markets as well, which included that the days and hours that farmers markets were open were sometimes inconvenient, that farmers markets tended to be located in out of the way places, and that they could get everything they needed from other places. Approximately half of customers thought that fruits and vegetables were less expensive at farmers markets than supermarkets, indicating that this could be highlighted in marketing materials to encourage residents of eastern North Carolina to shop at farmers markets more often. Customers who reported shopping at farmers markets very infrequently (a few times per year or less) reported consuming fewer fruits and vegetables than those who reported shopping more frequently, and approximately three-fifths of customers said that they had increased fruit and vegetable consumption as a result of shopping at farmers markets, demonstrating the positive contribution of farmers markets to healthy food choices among residents. The ECU Evaluation Team, in collaboration with Healthy Foods Coalition partners, has also conducted 13 indepth interviews with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients about barriers to shopping at farmers markets and roadside stands, and this input is helping to inform the direction of future PICH work. In addition, the ECU Evaluation Team is off to a great start with customer surveys this market season with over 125 surveys gathered thus far. They are hoping to surpass the number gathered last summer. PICH staff would like to thank the ECU Evaluation Team, including Stephanie Pitts, Ann Rafferty, Nancy Winterbauer, and Qiang Wu. We would also like to thank ECU Masters of Public Health (MPH) students and alumni, including Sonia Kaur, Mary Jane Lyonnais, Jared McGuirt, Megan Richardson and Olivia Whitt. We are also thankful for all the coalition members, and in particular, Chester Williams and Robin Sneed Barnes who helped with data collection. Late anti-smoking activist Terrie Linn McNutt Hall would have celebrated her 56th birthday this July. Hall (July 19, September 16, 2013) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, was an American anti-smoking and anti-tobacco advocate. She was a survivor of ten cancer diagnoses, undergoing 48 radiation treatments, and nearly a year s worth of chemotherapy, before and after undergoing a laryngectomy in She was well known for starring in one of the ads of the CDC s Tips from Former Smokers campaign, as well as traveling across the US to educate youth and adults about the consequences of tobacco use. Terrie wanted to encourage young people to never start smoking. If you don t start, you never have to worry about stopping, she said. She believed if she could prevent just one person from smoking, then she had done something great. In May 2013, Terrie was awarded the Surgeon General s Medallion, one of the highest honors in public health, for her work to encourage people to quit smoking or not to start. By her 11th cancer diagnosis, Hall died at the age of 53. Happy Birthday, Terrie, and Thank you! Celebrate Your Next Birthday - Smoke-Free or Tobacco-Free! 4 The New Hertford Farmers Market Takes a Novel Approach Starting and running a farmers market in rural, northeastern North Carolina is very different than a farmers market in the Triangle, Triad, or Western part of the state. Because of this, PICH and the Healthy Foods Coalition are constantly trying to be creative and lead the way in new and unique models for improving access to healthy foods and supporting farmers, small businesses, and organizations. Chocolate; local fruits, vegetables, honey, bedding plants and carpenter bee traps from Sunshine Nursery; hanging baskets and bedding plants from Northeastern High School FFA; homemade crafts from Country Flair; local eggs from Jackie Cartwright; roasted peanuts from American Legion Post 126; and vegetables and plants from The Farmer s Belle, a local CSA. This is a model that PICH hopes to replicate at other locations in year three of the grant. PICH has also helped to start other markets using unique models such as the Hyde County Farmers Market in Swan Quarter, which is a monthly market that partners with other organizations holding events the same day to boost the number of customers and enhance the variety of products offered. It is also held at a time and location that will capitalize on ferry traffic going and coming from Ocracoke Island. This past winter, Angel White, the Agricultural Teacher at Perquimans High School and the sponsor of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) student group, approached PICH with the idea of a student-run farmers market. There was little hesitation from PICH, and an advisory committee was quickly formed that included the Perquimans County and Town of Hertford managers, both of whom fully supported the idea and provided valuable insight on how the market could be most successful. The PICH Coalition and all the PICH partners continue their relentless efforts to increase access to healthy foods and support regional farming in an effort to improve both the health and the economy in the region with the communities. White and her FFA group got to work, and took it upon themselves to create a survey that could be distributed to Perquimans County residents about how they would like their farmers market to be operated. With over 80 responses and invaluable input, a time, day of the week, and location were chosen. The students then began developing market rules, and a vendor application. These documents were presented at an initial vendors meeting, which was publicized in the local paper, on social media, through flyers created by the students, and by word of mouth. The meeting was well attended and input from potential vendors was gathered and revisions made.
