If you haven t gotten in the holiday spirit yet, you still have a few weeks to do so. Christmas is upon us once again. It just goes to show you how quick the years pass us by. Christmas Village was a huge success this year and I m so thankful for each one that played a part in that. Without you, none of it would ve been possible. Celebrating 30 years of Christmas Village is such a milestone for County Homemakers. By continuing to work together for the good of our community, there s absolutely nothing we can t achieve! I look forward to the new Homemaker year, with lots of new projects and activities, as well as educational opportunities in store. I hope you are able to relax and cherish your time spent with friends and loved ones this holiday season! Merry Christmas, Cooperative Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences JGP/cm Holiday Closing The Extension Office will be closed for the holidays starting Wednesday, December 25 and will re-open on Thursday, January 2. Happy Holidays! December Roll Call: Share a family holiday tradition. Thought for the Month: Experience is not what happens to you; it is what you do with what happens to you. Aldous Huxley

4 Celebrating 30 Years!!
5 Flu and People With Diabetes Increased Risk from Flu - People with diabetes (type 1 and 2), even when well-managed, are at increased risk of severe disease and complications, like hospitalization and even death, as a result of getting the flu. This is because diabetes can make the immune system less able to fight infections. In addition, illness can raise your blood sugar level. Also, sometimes people don t feel like eating when they are sick, and this can cause blood sugar levels to rise and fall. Vaccination is the Best Protection against Flu - CDC recommends that people with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, who are 6 months and older, get a flu shot. (The nasal spray vaccine should not be given to people with diabetes.) People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes are at an increased risk of developing pneumonia from the flu, therefore a pneumonia (pneumococcal vaccine) is also recommended for them. A pneumonia vaccine should be part of a diabetes management plan. Treating Influenza - There are prescription medications called antiviral drugs that can be used to treat influenza illness. Antiviral drugs fight influenza viruses in your body. They are different than antibiotics, which fight against bacterial infections. Antiviral medications may help people with conditions that increase the risk of complications from flu (like diabetes) if given within the first 48 hours. Other Preventive Actions - In addition to getting vaccinated yearly, people with diabetes should take everyday precautions for protecting against the flu. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) Crafty Christmas Cheer Spin yarn into a wreath with pop appeal. To craft this door adornment, wrap Styrofoam balls (in two different sizes) and a Styrofoam wreath form with colored yarn. Then use a glue gun to affix the balls onto the form, as shown. Note: If you're hanging your final creation outdoors, be sure to spray it with a protective finish. CountryLiving.com
