RG 341- Paper Products are reporting the highest total injury and lost-time injury rates in the Sector. The industry employs about 4,100 FTE workers. 2

3 Ontario Paper, Printing and Converting Sector Observations YTD December 2015 and YTD December 2016 Lost-time Injury Pattern Comparisons The top three types of incidents resulting in lost-time injuries in 2016 are: contact with objects and equipment (31%), bodily reaction and exertions (31%) and falls (11%). The proportion of contact with object and equipment incidents decreased from 33% (78) to 31% (93) in Almost 27% (6) of incidents reported in RG 338-Folding Cartons are contact with objects and equipment, up from 15% (3) in Falls account for 16% (7) of lost-time injuries reported in RG 39-Pulp, Newsprint & Board Industries in 2016, up from 8% (3) in The average age of workers injured in 2016 is 46 years old, down slightly from 47 in % (16) of workers injured are under the age of 25, similar to 5% (13) in

4 Ontario Paper, Printing and Converting Sector Observations YTD December 2015 and YTD December 2016 Lost-time Injury Pattern Comparisons This year sprains and strains account for 28% (85) of lost-time injuries, up from 25% (74) in Almost 41% (9) of lost-time injuries in RG 338- Folding Cartons are sprains and strains, up from 30% (6) in Back injuries in the sector increased from 18% (42) of lost-time injuries reported in 2015 to 19% (57) in About 15% (46) of lost-time injuries in the Sector are hand and/or finger injuries. Almost 23% (10) injuries reported in RG 341- Paper Products and 20% (31) of injuries in RG Printing, Platemaking and Binding are hand and/or finger injuries. In 2016 almost 26% (79) of workers injured in the Sector and 44% (16) of injured workers in RG 41-Corrugated Boxes are employed as processing & manufacturing machine operators and related production workers. 4

6 Ontario Paper, Printing and Converting Sector Contact with Objects and Equipment Incidents January to December 2016 Injury Patterns The average age of the injured worker is 44 years old. Only 8% (7) of injured workers in the Sector are under the age of 25 and 56% (52) are 45 years of age and older. Top 3 Nature of Injury: cuts, lacerations-25% (23), nonspecific injuries-17% (16), and bruises, contusions-13% (12). Cuts and lacerations account for 36% (18) of lost-time injures reported in RG 333-Printing, Platemaking and Binding. Finger injuries account for 33% (31) of lost-time injuries reported in the Sector and 47% (7) of injuries in RG 341-Paper Products. The 3 most common types of finger injuries reported are cuts/lacerations (12), amputations (9), and fractures (6). 6

However, overall the lost-time injury rate in the sector has increased in the sector. Reforestation & Other Forestry Services are reporting the highest total injury and lost-time injury rates in the sector. The industry employs about 350 FTE workers. 8

In the Sector contact with object and equipment incidents resulting in lost-time injuries increased from 34% (55) in 2015 to 36% (58) in Over 46% (11) of lost-time injuries reported in 2016 in RG 36-Veneers, Plywood, Wood Preservation are contact with objects and equipment incidents, up from 30% (6) in The average age of workers injured in 2016 is 40 years old, about the same as in The average age of workers injured in Reforestation and Other Forestry Services is 25 years old in

The 3 most common types of finger injuries reported are fractures (6), amputations (5) and nonspecific injuries and disorders (5). 10

Almost 34% (20) of injured workers in the Sector and over 45% (5) of injured workers in Veneer, Plywood, and Wood Preservation are under the age of 25. Top 3 Nature of Injury: nonspecific injuries-21% (12), fractures-16% (9), and amputations-10% (6). Finger injuries account for 28% (16) of lost-time injuries reported in the Sector. The 3 most common types of injuries reported are amputations (5), fractures (5), and nonspecific injuries (4). Over 45% (5) of injuries in Veneer, Plywood, and Wood Preservation resulting from contact with objects and equipment incidents are finger injures. 12
