Frontline Futures and Future Leaders
LEADERS IN COMMUNITY Leaders in Community (LiC) is a youth led voluntary organisation run by a group of active young adults aged between from Tower Hamlets, London. It was established in 2006 to empower young people in leadership and governance through creativity by providing an environment of creative learning in project development, management, fundraising and leadership skills. LiC enables and encourages young people at risk of social exclusion to take ownership of services and resources in their local area, and to have a positive impact on themselves and their community.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Vision: We inspire and empower young people to be active leaders in the community. Mission Statement: Leaders in Community will provide year olds with the creative opportunities, skills and motivation to develop both themselves and others into confident and inspirational leaders within the broader Tower Hamlets community. To increase understanding among young people to become leaders in their community and to inform, influence and engage the support of services providers, local agencies, policy makers and others in the wider community To work together with different Partners within Tower Hamlets for an empowered, safe and cohesive community
YOUTH ENGAGEMENT AND EMPOWERMENT LiC focuses on engaging young people in activities and projects that that will give them relevant skills in accessing opportunities appeal to them, and We believe that: Young people should be included in the development and management of the local area and involved in any decision making processes. Young people should have ownership over local resources, to have access to these and a say in how they are used. Young people should be recognised and acknowledged as important, active and valued members of their community
BENEFITS OF BEING GRASSROOTS FOCUSED Past projects Peer2Peer Past projects Clinical Commissioning Group Our reputation and standing within the local community Current affairs and our role in identifying solutions Early Intervention
BENEFITS TO YOUNG PEOPLE Creating skilled young people Increasing opportunities for jobs, give them network skills Giving young people a voice about the regeneration/ services This gives them access to resources and more ownership Engaged and involved in community development Giving them confidence, change of attitude and behaviour reduction of involvement in ASB, and other crime Assist in reducing poverty
GOOD PRACTICE The key is in the way you engage with young people Looking at specific needs of groups and diversifying engagement strategy We do this well because we are Youth Led from top down Our creative projects involve: Bee keeping, Live band workshops, video journalism, music production, Social Action Campaigns, community summer events, leadership training = Sit on our board, volunteering scheme

TESTIMONIAL Person A, Female, 21 years of age Before being introduced to Charles from LiC, I had become much unmotivated and quite disheartened by life in general. I had recently got fired, for a reason I did not completely understand nor believe, university was not looking great I became disinterested in the course I thought would mould my career and started to stray, all at the same time dealing with a rocky relationship with my mother. Having gone through a few things in life, I actually felt myself give up and the dreams I once envisioned became mere dust in my eyes. I felt there was no hope. I had no one. However, after meeting Charles, I found I had options again. He was able to broaden my ideas on the possible careers I would thrive in and benefit from. He not only showed genuine interest in what I was looking for, he showed genuine interest in my well being, which is something I had never really experienced yet always needed. I feel like I have got his unlimited help and at times just knowing he is there in case I do need him is enough drive to get on with it"
