Under the leadership of the director, the department exercises general supervision of the state s public health. Dr. Straub-Morarend s term will be three years. Recognize Your Co-Worker The Ambassador Club Program recognizes staff who have shown a special commitment to promoting excellence in the teaching, research, patient care, or administrative functions of the College of Dentistry. One individual is recognized semiannually from a list of nominations, which are screened and selected by a committee made up of previous Ambassador Club awardees. Eligible for consideration is any merit staff or professional and scientific employee who has demonstrated special qualities in performing their daily tasks. Guidelines and nomination forms are also available from Jan Swartzendruber, assistant to the dean, N308 DSB.
2 Page 2 Drs. Steven Vincent and Robert Robinson Collaborate on New Edition of Tumors and Cysts of the Jaws A soon-to-be-released new edition of Tumors and Cysts of the Jaws, long considered the bible for diagnostic pathology of the jawbones, is the result of a collaboration between Drs. Robert A. Robinson (left lower photo), professor in the Pathology Department, UI Carver College of Medicine, and Steven D. Vincent (left upper photo), professor and head of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine in the UI College of Dentistry. Their publication is one of 40 volumes that comprise The Atlas of Tumor Pathology. In the 1940s, following a cancer research meeting that was held to create a classification of neoplastic diseases, the first edition of The Atlas was sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council and published by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). Over the years, responsibility for producing the subsequent editions of the series evolved. The new edition is being published by the American Registry of Pathology. Originally produced for the US military, the texts are now used by clinical pathologists and research scientists throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico, Central and South America, and South Africa. The new edition of Tumors and Cysts of the Jaws includes information about using research-based diagnostic techniques such as assessing tumors at the molecular level and utilizing imaging (radiographs, CT scans, and MRIs) to achieve optimal treatment and prognoses for patients. The text s pathology images are all in color and an electronic version of the text also accompanies the volume. Dr. Vincent says the 2012 fourth edition, was a great opportunity to collaborate with my friend and colleague. Dr. Robinson concurs. Steve and I both have an interest in diseases that affect the head and neck. Sometimes, individual patients are seen at both institutions, and having that close working relationship makes for great patient care. That collaboration contributed immensely to the eventual publication of this book. (Above): An x-ray image shows a large tumor in the left lower jaw. Over the past 10 years, Drs. Vincent and Robinson have also offered collaborative educational programs at the US and Canadian Academy of Pathology meetings.
3 Page 3 Dr. Christopher Squier Applies for NIDCR Grant Renewal to Continue More Than 2 Years of Dental Research Training Programs Dr. Christopher Squier, Dows Institute for Dental Research and Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, has applied for a renewal of the College of Dentistry s Institutional Training Program in Oral Health Research (T32 grant). The grant, which is funded by the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), has provided a variety of training opportunities in dental and craniofacial health research at Iowa. A renewal of the T32 grant would continue to provide training opportunities for different career stages, including the PhD and post-doctoral level, in the area of dental and craniofacial health research at the University of Iowa. The Institutional Research Training Program occupies a central position in the overall effort of the College of Dentistry and the University of Iowa to develop promising individuals for careers as researchers, clinical scholars, and educators. For more than 2 years, the College of Dentistry, through its federally funded pre- and post-doctoral dental research training programs, including an Institutional Dentist-Scientist program (K-16), Institutional Dental Student Research Program (T-3), and the T-32 Institutional Comprehensive Training Program, has provided an outstanding environment for research training, which prepares exceptional individuals for careers in oral health research. Scholarship is nurtured through core research support provided by the Dows Institute to facilitate research projects and fund pilot work by faculty. There are opportunities to participate in larger, externally funded research programs, such as the NIDCR-funded project, Fluoride and Other Factors in Childhood and Adolescent Bone Development, directed by Dr. Steven Levy; the Craniofacial Clinical Research Center, directed by Dr. Clark Stanford, which is a component of the UI s Institute for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CTSA); and the Iowa component of the NIDCR FaceBase Consortium, directed by Dr. Jeffrey Murray. The Office of Clinical Research, directed by Dr. Clark Stanford, provides an excellent environment for carrying out translational and clinical research funded by both NIH and industry. This supportive research atmosphere is exemplified by the College of Dentistry being ranked among the top seven dental schools in the number of AADR/IADR meeting presentations and among the top ten state dental schools in its level of extramural funding from NIDCR. October Well On Our Way (WOOW) Updates WOOW is an ongoing program by UI Wellness to remind and reward you for your healthy behaviors in the 7 Dimensions of Wellness. 7 Page 7 Tai Chi in the DSB! Tai Chi classes are returning to the College of Dentistry; available to faculty/staff/students for an eight-week session. Tai Chi fosters health of mind, body and spirit through training in relaxation, breathing, posture, and slow integrated movement. Over time, practicing Tai Chi reduces stress and improves balance, strength, cardiovascular health, and alignment. Because Tai Chi exercises are done in a standing position, there is no need for a mat, a block, or need to get down on the floor. Lori Enloe, our instructor for this series, is a physical therapist and certified Tai Chi Fundamentals instructor who has studied Tai Chi since She has taught in Iowa City since 200 using a program which is based in traditional Yang Style Tai Chi. This curriculum systematically teaches the basic movements of Tai Chi in a natural, efficient manner. There is an added plus: Lori says that Tai Chi also helps her keep balanced as a parent of two active boys! Our eight-week sessions will begin on October 17, in W220A & B. There is limited space, so sign up soon so you don t miss out! Dates for Tai Chi: October 17, 24 & 31 November 7, 14, 21 & 28 December & 12 (possible make-up date) 12:10-12:0 pm $48/eight-week session Call Hilda Bowers (-8139) to register.
